add power steering to a 95 tracker 4wheel drive
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:07:27 PM »
This is my first post Love the site. Have had the vehicle for about 2 weeks now and love it haven't got to go out and have some real fun crawling but soon hopefully I have done a very very little in it but not the trail i usually take my 4 runner on wich i am sell ing now cause I need money for a honey moon now.
95 trakcer with 2 1/2 coil spacer lift 3 inch body lift and crown vic reat shocks nappa hubs of some sort and 33inch tire oh lincon locked rear(I picked it up for 1100 yay savage title though :/ )

I know where i can get power steering from a guy who is parting out his 93 jx sidekick for 100 bucks.

1. will it work on mine?
2. how hard is it to do I'm pretty mechanically inclined?
3. what will it do to my mpg?
4. Any thing else i should know?
I love god, my girl, my family, my zuk, my stang,

Yes, you can swap it on.  It sounds like the vehicle your pulling the power steering from is a 16v.  If it is an 8v the bracket will need to be modified.  You will also need the entire steering setup from the front end, the manual steering box has a different length tie rod setup.

I'll page BRD HNTR, he did a manual to power swap on his Tracker and should be able to give you the lowdown.

Welcome to the sickness.  :)

It is a simple change out, unless going to the other type motor.  The mount for 16 valve and 8 valve is different, but nothing a torch and welder can't fix (I would recommend getting the right one).  The steering shafts are different length, so get one with the steering box.  They bolt up same place as manual steering.  Your bolts may be stretched from larger tires and rocks & things.  (My front bolt was a bugger removing and a pain putting the new one in its place.)  Same belts work.
I never really noticed a change in mileage, but steering is much easier, especially on the trails.
You probably DO NOT need to adjust the steering box.  If you do read about it, the adjustment is made at full turn.  If adjusted at midway it puts lots of pressure on the box at full turns.
I did not have the wiring for the pressure switch on the pump, so it isn't hooked up (not required).  There is a write up to add an extra washer under the spring in the pump to increase the pressure, if normal power steering isn't enough.

I didn't think I needed it until I had it in.  Nice addition.

done and I love it:)

It took me about 5-6 hours but with the right tools and a little help from a friend for about 30 minutes i bet it could be done in like 2-3 hours.

If any one has any questions go ahead and shoot.
