Installing Lincoln Locker
« on: June 27, 2011, 01:36:31 PM »
I have an off-road only 89 Tracker.I am going to weld up the rear.I am just curious what to look for as far pulling the axles etc.
Any tricks or things to watch out for, that you guys have already been through?

Thanks
Randy

its pretty straight forward, 4 bolts on either side of the axle housing and viola... after u pull the shafts, remove the 3rd member (disconnect 4bolts from driveshaft, rear ABS sensor wire, and 4 bolts for rear upper A arm) then pull the whole member out and set it on the bench, some use different methods, but the important thing no matter how you "install" the lincoln locker is to keep the gears and bears and all parts clean.  I use tin foil and wrap bearings gears and everything to prevent spatter from sticking. Then lay in the heat, I melted all the spiders together on mine and then cut 2 pieces of plate to fit across all 4 spiders and welded it to all of them on both sides.... been 2 yrs of wheeling with 33x14x15" Pitbull rocker tires and the only carnage that I have done so far is snapped a front u-joint on the rear driveshaft... it does make an awfully attention grabbing chirp when I go around corners on pavement driving to my wheeling site (imagine an e-brake pulled at 55mph)

if you use a wire feed welder with gas make sure you do not use carb cleaner to clean the gears, you could make fosgene gas (spell check) and possibly Kill yourself.

They will chew up your tires, will eventually break axles, and are pretty noisy in parking lots.  But other then that they work fine.  Make sure you have good welds, pavement has a lot more traction so it so it will put more stress on the drivetrain when it's welded together.
