VSS help with a sidekick/GV conversion
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:37:34 AM »
I have a 2.5 L in my sidekick followed by a GV Auto to toy/D300 dual cases.

I am running a GV instrument cluster. Needless to say the Dana 300 Tcase has a mechanical speedo cable.
Has anyone had any experience with turming a mechanical speedo cable into the electronic signal required by the GV cluster/computer?

Yep, I've done a few... I can help you out but I'm holding the information hostage to see some pictures of your drivetrain. I'd like to see everything bolted together and in the truck... It sounds very interesting.

So, got any pictures? :)

I got no secrets, although I do not have direct pics of the drivetrain ( I could snap one) in exchange for technical goodness on VSS!!! :P

But here is the link to the build therad of this veteran. Arguably the oldest SAS trackick in existance... I'm not kidding this is actually its resurection conveniently dubbed V2.0 turned 2.5.

I just spent several hours going through the 18 pages of build. I must say, very fine work. I would love to see some action shots or videos showing what it can do.

These are so far the only two videos taken at the Race Mile cleanup day at KOH. We were so busy working on the buggy I had no time to wheel it... Kinda sad considering we dragged it all the way from BC...

The truck is back in the shop for some finishing work as it was not 100% finished when the KOH deadline approached.

ANYWAYS: still looking for some VSS input (pun).

Please anyone?

Yes, that is some very fine work.  I would like to see more information on the Tranny/double transfer cases.  Also interested in Eric's VSS fix.

I'm assuming this must be a matter of National Security...  :-X

It is!

Just heading out the door for the race and needed to print out some documentation...

Anyway, there are many ways to skin this cat but I use a cable driven sensor that creates a pulsed signal and then use a conditioner to correct it for the ECM. This way one can have the Sidekick/Trcker cable speedo work and the ECM happy at the same time.

from JTR or Jags that Run I use the:
Speed Sensor, # 4PAC-TOY
Four-pulse sine wave for Toyota with
22 mm metric thread and .187 tang drive.

From Dakota Digital I use the:
SGI-5 Universal Signal Interface Unit

ALso, to calibrate the 4 cylinder Tachometer to work with the V6 ECM output I use:
SGI-8 Tachometer Interface Unit

If you decide to go this way, we can discuss wiring if you need to... but for now, I got to go racing..

Thanx Eric. That helps a lot.

I also am running the sidekick speedo cable so I'm in the same boat.

So let's see if I got it right.

1.

The toy VSS is 4 pulse - that's what you use. It simply bolts to the sidekick Tcase (ie: the 22 mm  thread is the same)?

If so I run into this VSS as well:

http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/parts-upgrade/vehicle-speed-sensor-mci

2.

The SGI-5 Universal Signal Interface Unit : what does it do?  Does it convert the signal into different pulse count? Does the Suzuki signal count differ from toy?
I am assuming that's what you referred to as "conditioner".

3.

Since I am using the GV 2.5 l instrument cluster I imagine  that I would not need the Tach interface ( I am already getting my tach reading from the ECU).

I tried to sign up on Saturday but the "man with power" has not activated my account....

OK... getting somwhere...

According to this site both toy and zuk VSS's run 4 pulses per rotation.

http://magsensors.com/vssapps.html

It appears to me that this unit is all you really need to run the vehicle and have the rigth signal and corect (pending your gearing match up of course) speed.

Conversly I am assuming that the SGI 5 unit is just a "nice to have" at this point if you REALLY want to calibraet your speedometer.

Is that all making sense?

It all should unless Suzuki has changed the PPM count post 1997 as this chart ends on that model year.

Eric from your knowledge what's the Zuk 99 and up PPM count?
