It can be done, but you don't want to.  The problem is when you hit a few bumps there is nothing to slow down the bouncing of the front end, you'll quickly loose control if you hit anything at speed.

You don't have to get a fancy set of long travel shocks, some 20 dollar specials from the auto parts store will work.

DO NOT DO THAT!

Very unsafe and dangerous to you and everyone around you at any speed above 5 miles per hour.

Please don't do that...

I would measure your flex with the leaf springs and see what your travel is like, then just find a light shock to match.

On my SJ with the folding shackles on the front I only have around 10.5" of travel without shocks.  I use a pair of shocks from the front of a 93 Ford F-250 that have 11.5" of travel and built my shock mounts to match.  I cut down a set of shock tower replacements from Ford so everything fit properly.  When I order replacements I just get the lightest duty shock they have.  :D

If you want to use the really long travel shocks you will probably need to swap to coils, really long springs, or some sort of trick suspension.  Otherwise you won't get the travel you need to properly use them.

ok, ya my friends dad has a fork lift business so we are going to flex it out with one of those. I am going to be running shock hoops from trail-gear but i can modify them if needed. I just got my racing seat brackets painted and mounted, the seat fit great!!! I am glad I made them the way i did, the inch higher ride makes the sidekick seem not so small. lol

I'm running Bilstein 5125's on my samurai.  The are a little bit much for my rig as it sits now(no bumpers/winch yet), but when loaded down with gear it rides like a dream. Not an extremely cheap shock, but definitely far from the bottom.
