A little bit of lift?
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:58:59 AM »
Hi Guys

I'd like to lift my '96 Samurai a little, more for looks than anything else, 1" would be fine for me - would shackles do the job OK? I've looked at the 'Add A Leaf' option too but because I live in Greece I think the shipping costs would be enormous!! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Grahame

I added a single leaf to all four corners and got about 1 1/2".
I used the leaf below the main leaf from a donor Sammy I bought (a Junker)
Check the local Salvage yards and cannibalize the spring sets.
Also you may want to save the rest of the spring sets as I have broken a rear main
leaf on one of my Trail Adventures.

Hope this helps you out.

I have used shackles for a 2" lift and it worked well although I also install longer shocks at the same time. I would think for 1 " you may not need the shocks. I also removed the sway bar when I installed the shocks it was holding up the suspension in the front, still drives nice though dont really miss it.

When I had a Sammy, I used 2" shackles and don't recall any problems. That was a long time ago though.

Any of the ideas above will work, the only issue you would see with the add a leaf is added stiffening to the suspension. If you are not flexing much then no worries, but these things are stiff enough stock in my opinion.
I'll wheel with anyone, even Jeeps as longs as they can keep up

if your looking for a quick fix, go with the shackles. you need 2" longer ones to get 1" lift. that is about as long as you want to go so you don't get poor handling issues. and its always good to give it a fresh set of shocks.

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies, I've decided to go with the shackle lift in spite of some negative comments I've read elsewhere about the effect on the springs! I also ordered replacement spring bushes, & once they're fitted I'll look at new shocks too  :)

Hmm, talking of the bushes - how hard is it to get the old ones out?

If a good set of channel lock pliers wont do it get out the torch and burn them out. stinks like dead hookers but works great. :)
