Moab and Tracker IFS axles
« on: October 16, 2020, 12:06:58 AM »
I recently installed ARB lockers in both front and rear diffs.
The front housing and gear carrier are steel.
With the front locker engaged the stock power steering was not up to the task.
Another call to Trail Tough and ram assist steering was on the way.
I was on my own building a bracket for  the steering pump for the Suzuki 2.3
It was also a challenge installing the Ram on the middle tie rod of the IFS steering.

The trip to the Rubicon was canceled because the trail was closed due to fires.
I just finished a week at Moab and wanted to share how the ARB’s and ram assist steering performed.
I knew the stock IFS CV axles would be a weak link and I took several spares.

The selectable lockers allowed this 4 door Tracker on 35’s to go almost effortlessly over obstacles I would have not considered before.
The Ram assist steering makes steering even when the front is locked, almost too easy.

I broke 2 inner CV’s and with the conversion to use left side axles on the right side, I can trail replace an axle in 15 minutes.

I had never broken a CV axle before going to 35” tires and a front locker.
I also could not climb obstacles as I now do.

I have tried the Toyota IFS CV axle conversion from Australia.
That conversion did not work properly because the Toyota inner CV’s bind at the 26 degree angle my extended travel front suspension requires.
I am having Dutchman axles re-spline the Toyota IFS axles so I can use 930 CV’s on the inner.
RCV axles guaranty their 930 CV’s to 28 degrees.

I question if I made a mistake not going to a Toyota solid front axle.
The reasons I did not is that I like how the IFS rides and absorbs the trail chop.
The other reason is that I have been told that some of the solid axle Swaps have serious “death wobble” in the steering.
I am very aware of death wobble from other Jeep projects.
This IRS Tracker with 35’s has no sign of steering wobble at 65 mph.
I hope to test the hybrid Toyota/930 CV axles in the next few months.
I hope this info is of value to those that enjoy finding the limits of their Trackers like I do.

I'm going to guess you have a first gen Tracker - primarily because I don't think there's a way to fit ram assist on a second gen - what really has me puzzled though is the reference to "this IRS Tracker on 35s" in the last paragraph.

My Tracker is a 1997, is that year a first Gen?
"this IRS Tracker on 35's" should have said IFS

Sounds pretty awesome! Got any pics or vids of this IFS 4door twin locked on 35's? That's just the kind of inspiration this forum needs.
I'm running 32's on my XL7 with open/open and definitely thought about just how much thrashing that front end is built to take this last season...knock on wood, haven't toasted anything yet

If you think the trail chop is bad with IFS you probably won't like the SAS, yes, more articulation, but the ride is worse, tire air pressure can really help the ride, I ran my stampers at Moab at 3psi
