Samurai diesel question

My names Eddie this is actually my first post on this forum page, I have a subaru WRX that ive been working on for almost three years. To make a long story short next year ill be finished with my paramedic program at my community college and ill be heading  into NYC to work in EMS. I not gonna be able to take my WRX in because im nervous about it getting stripped for parts but besides that the clutch is way to heavy for traffic driving.
That being said i have always had a sweet spot for a little Samurai. A while back i saw extreme 4x4 did a special on alternative fuel in a samurai and they made mention that you can convert them to diesel fuel as well.
My question is money wise (ball park figure) and parts wise what i would need to do the conversion.
i head that the vw rabit diesel motors were a bolt up option but i could totally be wrong
if you could guys give me a leg up on what would be need to do the conversion i would be extremely thankful for the time and knowlege

Well, they are not a bolt up option that is for certain.  :)

The conversion is probably going to cost you well more then the vehicle itself.  Just their veggie converter system is probably around a 1000.  The diesel conversion kit itself with wiring is another 1000, then you have to get the donor engine/vehicle on top of that.  But in the end you get a sweet setup.

This can, of course, be done on a bit smaller budget.  There have been a couple of Nissan diesel swaps lately as well that appear to be working well.

I knew it wasnt going to be a dirrect bolt up, but i figured for city driving a small vechicle is the way to go and the desiel cant be beat, i did bit of research they said that you need a lift kit to so as the VW oil pan had good clerance

I have heard of people doing the conversion for as little as $1000, and up to $10,000.  It all depends on what kind of deal you find on parts, how much work/fab you do yourself, and what kind of condition the parts are in (if the engine needs fixed, rebuilt, etc.), and how many other mods you do along with the conversion.  I would guess a good ballpark figure would be $3-$4000 average for the total conversion.

thats what i was hoping cause ive seen samurai for sale on craigs list for like 3-5 hundo so i was thinking 5k with a desiel should be very good fuel friendly ride and reliable too and great for city driving i want to keep the budge small cause after all it is the city and like they say S**t happens  ::)

for city driving, I'd simply get a POS beater diesel and not mess with a sammy there simply because  **it does happen.   no sense spending 5k on a city driving toy if its something that mayget stolen, smashed or just destroyed.

Whatever you build make sure you put some lining on the bottom so it doesn't rust out.  :)
