leaf spring suggestions on RUF
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:34:26 PM »
Here is the deal, I have done the TT missing Link & RUF set up on my 87 samurai along with the 1"longer shackels on the back. Took the overload spring out of the origional rear packs and then installed them up front (less the overload springs). I would like the back to sit a little higher but still ride good. I was planning to put the 2nd spring out of the stock front pack (the one with the "Military wrap") back in the front pack but through my reasearch here, I have seen where some people actually put it in the rear pack and put the 2 smaller springs (left over from the origional front pack) back into the springs now under the front. Ride is my 1st priority then it is height and last strength. The sammy is a blast to drive and now is my DD much to the dismay of my wife and 14 year old daughter.I built it for her to play with from the start but now she is too "Grown up". My good fortune Right! Any constructive input is welcome.

I use the long spring without the military wrap in my front pack, works fine and doesn't ruin the ride.  You can also take your springs to a spring shop and have them re-arched to give it a bit more arch then stock.

Thanks Drone, which would you put in the rear pack to help lift a little bit without hurting ride? I read on here a guy cut the "Eyes" off of the main spring that was origionally on the front pack that he had pulled off and put them on the rear of his Sammy as the "second" spring. He was having issues with spring wrap at the time he did this but I was wondering if it would hurt the ride and how much lift would give. I am sitting about an inch lower in the back as compared to the front right now. What do you think?

That won't hurt and will give you a bit of lift.  When I did the add-a-leaf I stole the long spring from the previous rears, I had already wrapped the upper spring pretty well.  The first time I've actually seen a full S instead of just a slight bend.

If you don't have spare springs laying around call Hawk Suzuki, they can send you just the one long spring.  They use the lower spring in most add-a-leaf kits as it gives you more lift so they usually have a spare sitting around.  I did this when I made my second spring pack.

After I destroyed my second set of rear springs we built a 4-link for the rear.  I was looking at making a traction bar then decided it wasn't all that much more to just build the full rear suspension.  She handles great now, still use the RUF though.
