CJ fronts on samurai???
« on: May 05, 2010, 07:09:50 AM »
I just got a pair of cj front springs from my auto teacher, and if i recall they are the same width spring as my stock samurai springs. Will these fit either front or rear on my samurai? I was hoping they would fit in the rear and i can move the rear up front with ML, would that work? any advice will help, thanks guys

It will work, but they are a bit longer so you will have to do some modification.  The standard used to be CJ front springs in the rear, rear springs up front.  One way is to build new shackle mounts, the other is to build or buy some revolving shackles.

Low Range has both options availalbe, and there are a couple of other companies that make kits as well:

I build folding shackles on the front end for an RUF conversion, they are a bit chatty but work great.   You will also want to extend your drive line and brake lines to match the extended travel.  For the drive-line some 1" spacers will work fine, or they also sell extended slip yolks as well.

Well im already starting out with an SPOA on stock springs. Im going to keep it an SPOA too. i already have 1" drive line spacers, will that be enough? If i do revovling shackles in the rear will i need to move the shackle mount or will they work where they are? And im not to concerned about this because it wont see very much street but how will it handle on the street with revolvers front and rear? Body roll central? Do you also know how much longer the cjs are compared to the sami rears? sorry about all the questions but i really appreciate all your help, thanks!

With the revolvers you shouldn't have to make any modifications to your existing shackle mounting points.  You may need to extend your frame or have a solid bumper though so they have something to rest on.

If you are looking at moving the shackle mounts I would plan on doing that instead of the revolvers.

The 1" spacers will probably be enough, they are on my front end but mileage may vary.

I believe the CJ's are 3" longer, so your axle will be 1.5" further back.  Not sure for certain, I will try and look it up later or someone else can chime in.

Mine handles fine on the street with the folding shackles in the front.  It's just a bit chatty sometimes.  A club member has folding shackles front and rear with YJ springs, he claims the ride is fine on roads.  The problem shows up when trying to bomb fire-roads, if you hit bumps at speed your rig can bounce off of the springs and be in sort of a free fall state.  Good shocks will hide most of that but you will want to plan on driving a bit slower then normal until you get the feel of your rig.
