speedometer gears
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:00:44 PM »
My speedometer stopped working a while ago. Had it checked and the guy said that the gears were stripped.  It' been a while now and I think he said there's one in the transfer case, and one on the back of the instrument cluster. I've had so many issues with the speedometer. I've been through two different instrument clusters, a speedo cable. These gears are gonna be probably impossible to find. My mileage is off now because the odometer stopped too. I'm always guessing my speed. Anybody got any idea what I can do? or if its possible at all to find the gears?

Are you talking about the 96 Sidekick in your name? if so, the gear that he would be refering to is on the end of the cable where it goes into your transfer case, there is no gear in your instrument cluster, that end of the cable has a flat on it that goes into the back of the speedo gauge.  If you get under your ride and look where the rear driveshaft comes out, there will be a cable going in right near there (directly under the 4x4 shifter), it will take one (i believe 10mm) bolt and the assembly will slide out.... (be prepared as you will lose some gear oil) there will be a white plastic gear on the end of the cable.  You may or may not be able to find one, I have a few of em still on old bone geos at my place, but you should be able to get a replacement at a local U-PULL-IT for a few $$ with only basic hand tools.

thinking about it some more, he could have meant that the plastic piece that the cable goes into on the rear of the speedo could be stripped.... not a gear tho... (the end of the cable goes from round to flat, and the speedo has a 3/16" wide rectangular slot for it to go into) i suppose this could have stripped out somehow if one of the ODO gears inside the cluster were to have gotten froze up somehow, seems rare though

If you need to replace the one at the end of the cable in the tcase, make sure you get a gear that is the same color as the one you remove.  There are different colors of gears (they have a different number of teeth on them and/or the "cut" of the teeth are different).  The best way to figure out if the gear is going to be the same color as your old one, before you actually remove the "new" gear, is to find a trackick with the same setup as yours (meaning the same engine/tranny combo).
