Bent Srut Tower
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:23:23 AM »
I just recently went to got a front end Alighnment and found out that me Passenger side Strut tower is bent way in, I cant even get to the bolt to take the strut off. The body shop quoted me all most 1000.00 to fix it, said that the frame it needed to be cut and replaced behind the tower and then a new one welled in place.  ( Are there any alturnitives to this, I had heard about a replacement that would allow me to use shocks instead fo the struts) ?????????????? ???

Sorry to hear that your tower is bent in . Did the frame collaps or did it rip the weld of the frame . Got any pics so we can give an idea where to start.

The alternatives are either going to be more expensive or will require the strut tower to be repaired - so if the cost is the issue ...

I'm having a bit of a difficulty in understanding how you could get the strut tower as bent as you say it is and not be aware of it - and impact to the wheel will destroy the strut and the control arm rather than bend the tower, and I don't see how you bend the tower without bending the body.

It might be an idea to get a second opinion, and yes, pictures would probably help me visualise the damage, even if I don't understand how it happened.

You might be surprised how weak the towers are. Bob and I were able to flex them with just a small prybar when we installed my lift. I think a strut brace should be one of the first mods people do.

I drive a GV so I have a strut brace, and I have removed it to change the struts, so I know how they flex - BUT - what I can't figure out is how you can apply enough force to bend it as much as this one will have been bent without it showing.

I'm wondering if it was jumped - but even if that were the case - you'd see the strut tower out of place when you open the hood.

Oh I hear ya. If it was bent that much you should be able to see it for sure.

You might want to make sure that it is the strut tower that is bent and not the body.  On Project Trouble we noticed that the body has slightly buckled resulting in the towers being off center.  We just cut the tower covers up to get the struts out and will probably cut up more in the future.

Negative camber does not automatically indicate a bent strut tower, it is possible the strut itself is bent .
When I was much younger I used to do front end work and wheel alignments.  I've seen some amazing results by just replacing the struts And a few cases where I was sure there was more damage till the struts were replaced.  Specifically on modified McPherson strut front ends like ther track/kick has.

But even using the shock strut conversion that I build the strut tower still needs to be close to stock location
