Diesel and low transfer case gears daily driver?
« on: September 27, 2011, 07:01:32 PM »
Hello, I am currently driving a 1986 suzuki samurai with a 3 inch lift, 31 x 10.5's, and a weber carb conversion. I would really like to use the samurai as a daily driver and increase it's ability to off-road and tow a trailer to the beach. Would a 1.9 L turbo diesel with 5:14 gears be a good choice?
There are a few questions I have, can the diesel be liveable without dieing of exhaust? Will this combination be okay to drive around town at speeds of 60-65 mph?
Thanks, any ideas or comments would help

As far as the fumes and smell, if you decide to do it just make sure you have no exhaust leeks and i would recommend a full exhaust facing straight out the back or you could always turn it up behind the rear bumper above the cab.

Im sure you will get someone else to chime in on the swap, it has been done before for sure.

If you put in a diesel you will want to change the gearing the opposite direction.  The stock readline on the newer TDI is 4600 RPM vs 6500 RPM of the 1.3.

While the turbo diesel is a nice engine, a 1.6L swap might be easier and is more supported.  A 1.6L 16v from a Tracker is rated at 95hp, only 4 less then the older 1.9l TDI's, and a 50% improvement over the stock 1.3l.

Easily 100 with a few simple breathing mods for the 16v. Easy swap and MUCH less expensive too. You could probably get a near new JDM 16v and trans, and a complete beater for all the wiring and whatnots, for the price of a clapped out WV diesel.  Then there's all the adaptive crap you'd have to get or fab for the diesel. The money you'll save will go a long way to buying fuel ( regular) and it won't stink. Your milage may vary. Lots of diesel threads to peruse for opinions here, as well as 16v swap threads.
