YJ spring over ?'s need help!
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:30:09 PM »
i have a spoa lift on a 1994 sami. i am running 31's on it now, but i want to do the yj spring conversion to get me flex and lift. what do i need to accomplish this other than yj springs? What can i expect to gain, and will i have to get new brake lines again? any help would be appreciated

you need the new relocating brackets for the inside spring mounts, and you need either boomerang shackles or missing links fo the front and rear. the new spring plates and i'd suggest new u-bolts as well.

my 86 is SPOA with 4 leaf yj's, missing links front and rear, on 33's.

a few pictures of her flexing and her stance after i put them in.

i have trail toughs kit and it was a breeze to install. airdreams1 is right, the ride is softer on and offroad. still not a cadillac but softer than stock springs.

this is probably a stupid ? but does missing link refer to the mounting system or to the steering system, becasue i bought the z-link steering system for my sami because it does have the spoa lift right now, but i want more height and flex than 4.5 inches... and if i get toyota axels how hard is it to convert those axels with the yj lift?

missing link refers to the shackle that mounts the spring to the frame. not the steering, i have a z-link and it sucks, bump steer like a bastard but high steer has been out of the question for now. you will get more height and more flex out of YJ's. i havent done yota's so i wouldnt know specifically, but it could only be as simple as moving your spring perches on your yota's.

Be prepared to replace your front drive line, I just dealt with this ordeal on mine. I had Bonzeye's and it vibrated some, but with the YJ's the upper joint was bound up big time. Any one want to buy some good Bonzeye's?

this is what i did for the driveshaft problem up front, keep in mind it was done on a lathe at a machine shop so it was a very professional cob job... i cant feel any vibrations from it. not to say there isnt any but i cant feel it so nothing to worry about  ;D

It looks like that would fix the length problem but mine wouldn't even rotate due to the binding yoke problem, and no reasonable amount of grinding was gonna fix it. I finally bit the bullet and got one of Trail Tough's high angle CV's, works great but it sure put a big dent in my wallet.

yea i really should have gone with a CV but at the time i was spending so much and doing the YJ's, missinig links, got the bumpers, lighting, tcase gears, mighty kong and re-doing other things that needed freshning up that things like high steer and the CV's got put on the back burner. i run the lengthened drive shaft in the front and double spacers in the rear. did some grinding to make the rear clear so it could rotate with plenty of clearance
