low oil pressure and oil spray on low end of engine, 1.3l
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:04:10 AM »
hows it going guys, i have a 87 samurai and for the past few days its been running like garbage, have to rev it out alot for it go go anywhere, i have no 5th gear, i have stock tires on and iv always had 5th befor this...oil is leaking from front of engine by the oil pan, i dont believe its a gasket because its puddled up and seems to be alot, i have pretty much zero oil pressure and when im around 3,000 to 3,700 rpm my oil pressure is at only 15-20psi normally its at 40 or so, iv tryed searching what else the problem could be and i have no idea

The FSM calls for a minimum of 42 psi |removethispart|@ 3000 rpm warm, so I don't think you want to be driving that thing with low oil pressure - that's just asking for trouble - find out where it's leaking from and fix it - is it safe to assume that you have checked the oil level and topped it up?

The oil pump is on the front of the engine - it's unlikely that it would suddenly start leaking externally, not without some sort of impact that would crack it, but a loose oil filter or even oil pressure light switch would/could cause the symptoms you describe.

You mention actual pressure numbers, so I assume you have a gauge fitted - it's possible for the gauge line to leak, especially if you used a brass line or a brass T to allow both the gauge and the switch to connect to the same port.

yea i topped off oil, i found it to actually be leaking from the front of engine by the crank pully, gaskets looks some what ok but im thinking it could possible be a gasket, and yea i used brass t lines, it started to leak but thats all fixed...i didnt kno the oil pressure switch would casue that, not once has the oil lite came on...or its just broke lol

you need to replace the pump, could be loose backing plate or the internal
seal that is blown, but either way just replace it, they don't cost that much
and you will ruin the engine if you don't.

Now for the fun part, you will need to remove the pan to do the pump right
so it won't leak at the front pan seal, at least drop it down a bit to get the
sealer in there. I tried to half ass do mine 2 times, ended up doing it a 3rd time
dropping the pan so just bite the bullet and do it right the first time.

There were 2 studs on my engine at the front that hold the pump on,
I pulled those out and replaced them with bolts instead, you might have to do
the same, remove the radiator, fan, cover and timing belt, depending on the
mileage you might as well change the water pump and the timing belt while you
are torn down that far, it just makes sense

Good Luck

if the pressure is low the oil pump still needs to be replaced, or
at least take it off and make sure the over pressure blow off valve
is not stuck open, that's what caused my turbo to fail in Moab, low
oil PSI from the stupid stuck piston in the pump
