Leaf Springs...bend til break? How much flex is too much....
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:33:40 AM »
Well its been awhile since I trolled these forums, but the evil seed is still growing, and now I'm in need of some fellow Suzuki insight. I've been working on a Samurai and finally went with RUF+Cj...along with a S/R in frt and still running SPUA w/ 31".

Recently I did some late night work before a ride and got to test it out some, and I was surprised at the results....some Poser pics below. Sorry it was around midnight that I flexed it to determine shock location.

I'm not going for some super special flex, but I'm curious how dependable it is. I find it hard to believe the springs can handle this type of twisting abuse....but then again, I bet a SPOA will flex the springs alot more....SO how much is too much? Should I worry? I'm in the process of mounting bumpstops and I'm not sure how conservative I want to get or if they will help. All feedback encouraged and welcome.

<ps- I know your jealous of the seat covers....long story>

THOSE SEAT COVERS ROCK!  :)

Anyway, not sure on the RUF flex issue.  I know mine haven't broken yet, but it's a trailer queen at this point.  But I do run an extra #2 leaf in my spring pack to keep it from getting any reverse arch.

..enhance....enhance...enhance...

Your driver spring looks awful close to a "reverse" arch....hard to tell. Is it RUF? Do you run bumpstops? I demand a close up of front tire tucked with leaf spring in the picture.  ;)

Maybe others have pics of there rigs with a frt/rear tire tucked and able to see the leaf spring shape....All are WELCOME. I'm pretty new to leaf springs, after mainly wheeling a tracker. But after watching some Cherokees and Toyotas, I question how much a RUF can take.

RUF with folding front shackles.  I haven't put bumpstops back on it, one of those things I need to do.

If you browse around the Crawlers NW picture gallery you might find some better ones:

Mine don't seem to twist up as much as yours, but I am running an SJ-410 so the springs are inboard 1.5" on each side.

If you consistently negative arch the springs (compress them past flat), then it will either wear them out or break them fairly quickly.  Put bumpstops on, so the springs can not arch past flat.

Thanks for the pics Drone. After browsing thru the galleries, you have successfully made me envy the west coast wheeling even more.....I did find some pics of interest, but hard to ultimately tell.

That last one in particular you can see the spring fairly decent, it might have a very slight arch and twist. I think you probably don't hit this type angle often, and it definitely isn't anywhere near as twisty as my extreme case picture.....but I wander if you lifted one of your front tires super extreme...

I know recently I have watched some leaf springs in action, and browsed numerous pictures, and you think to yourself....that ain't right. But what we do with our rigs sometimes probably isn't right either....I agree with Skyhiranger, at a certain point you will break it, which is probably the point I'm at....idk.

I do plan to install bumpstops...You think that will solve the "twisting" action of the leaf? Will the axle pivot on the bumpstop?

I have a feeling the twisting will break the the spring faster, due to the binding nature. I toyed with some type twisting/rotating shackle, or johnny joint spring hanger.....I can't seem to find a company that make a joint that fits into the samurai spring eye itself. If someone knows one, I would be very interested.

There really is no good way to eliminate spring twist (side to side twist), IMO.  Just keep the springs from negative arching and they should live for a long time.
I'm still running the same RUF springs that I started out with (5 years ago, I think) and they are doing fine.  I have the bumpstops set so the springs can't negative arch.  I wheel it pretty hard (meaning it gets flexed a lot, and hard) probably 8-10 times a year.

Yea, I have been doing trails instead of rocks recently.  There is the secondary issue of the fact that I'm usually the one with the camera.  :D

I'm headed up north this weekend, I'll try to get a twisted up picture for you.
