beginner needs help with samurai build
« on: April 15, 2012, 06:11:08 AM »
Well I'm pretty new to samurai's iv owned 1 stock samurai that was rusted out but I loved it so I ended up buying another one in the thought of I can fix it up. All it really needed was axles hooking up and brakes and everything but it was pretty rust too. So acouple days ago I found a samurai with a good body only alittle rust on wheel wells. Its already lifted with a spoa lift and it has a shackle lift too. One of the cool things that I liked about it that it had a vortec 4.3 in it with a turbo350 trans. One thing I'm trying to figure out is what transfer case to use. I have a samurai case I can use and its kinda already set up so if but I'm not sure if it will hold up or not. Also the 4.3 is in but not hooked up and sugestion on radiators or and other mods that will help.

Radiator from a late 90s Thunderbird should be good, I used one in a 79 Mustang with a 351w

Now does the thunderbird come with 1 motor or is there a specific one that would work best?

I want to say I looked at the 96 and 97 V8 and one has a fill neck and one doesn't so you'd have to put a "T" in the top hose or find a way to use a remote reservoir to fill it. They are thin, probably as thin or thinner than a stock samurai radiator but a bit longer. They're really efficient and you could run an electric fan to get it to fit with the vortec

Alright thanks for all our help ill keepmy eye out of one of those now. I'm assuming most v8 cars will have a radiator that's smaller but will still do the job.

Also I have acouple question about the 4.3swap I'm doing. It was converted by the previous owner to caeb and has a th350 behind it. It's a vortex motor but can I get it so no computers will be involved to make it as simple as possible?

With it being Fuel Injection you're gonna have some sort of computer. I would find an S-10 or Blazer and get the entire wiring harness and ECU, find out what you absolutely need and make a harness.

Well i have the carb set up on the 4.3 so it shouldnt be to much wiring involved i hope. And for the th350 im gonna go with a manual throttle body to simplify even more. Also with the 4.3 swap will the samurai's fuel pump need to be swapped out for somthing that will pump at a higher psi or anything ?

The Samurai fuel pump is on the block, so it will probably need to be replaced.  :D

If the 4.3 doesn't have an on-block pump you can put an electric one in where the fuel filter normally sits in front of the fuel tank.  Fits great.

Well, it is actually on the head.  But if you are going with a carb then a you do not need a high pressure pump.  I would pick up a second one to carry as a spare as well.
