All Here?
« on: January 20, 2010, 06:07:16 PM »
K...  Been collecting parts for a while looking to build a deer lease truck for the east Texas gumbo and and few trails and parks around here.. Not a zuki pro by any means so I wanna throw out the list of what I have and what my plans are for review / criticism:

I have:

'87 Tintop - Straight Body - Rod knocking in the 1.3 and tranny is whining like mad..
1.6L from a Tracker (~75k miles)
Freshly Rebuilt Tranny
3.73 Front and Rear Thirds with Lockrights
a set of 6.4:1 Tranny gears
Harley D 40mm CV Carb
Petro-Works 1.6L Swap Kit
2" lift shackles
New Spring Pads for SPOA
Z-link Steering Link
New Luk Clutch
Twin-Stick Shifter for T-Case
1" Driveshaft Spacers

I need:

Adaption for Harley Carb to Intake
T-Case Mounting Upgrades
Front Knuckle rebuilds
Rear Axle Bearings and Seals
Electric Fuel Pump
"Jeep" Style Bypass Filter
Fuel Regulator

I am planning to purchase:

My-Side (Knocks out carb adaption / fuel regulator)
GM Alternator Mounting Brackets and 100amp alt
8500lb Winch

I will be removing a fully functional AC system from the truck. This is a winter use vehicle primarily and I want to keep it as simple as possible under the hood..

I am pretty competent at metal fab and will be doing the SPOA (fully boxed and Trussed) as well as fabbing front and rear bumpers, a roof rack, rear seat, and some other stuff for the little guy.. Winch is a must for pulling up stands, lowering feeders, undoing bad judgments, etc..

What am I missing here?...

Plan is to be able to turn a set of Gateway 32.7 x 8.5 Buckshots in the gumbo here in deep east TX.. Am I headed in the right direction here?

I would look at adding a traction bar in the back as well.  If your turning larger meats with a SPOA you increase your chance of wrapping that rear axle up.  Especially with the increase in HP.

Is your 1.6 an 8 valve or a 16v?  If it is the latter you need a computer, if it is the former you are in good shape.

Looks like a solid build.  Keep us updated as you go along!

~33x8.5 tires are kind of skinny for gumbo mud, I would think
a wider tire will help you float on the mud instead of digging in
and getting to the bottom.

I'm not a mud guy, hate getting out and digging out when I get stuck,
and the last time I got stuck was in liquefaction sand in a wash not far from
here, good thing a friend was with me or I'd of been walking for tools.

went from the surface to the bumper in less than 1 second, the front
tires bumped thru, felt like I hit a big rock, the back went to the bumper.

That was running 235 75 15 "mud" tires, which tread I now look at more
of an A/T tread.

since your build looks like it's heading into the right direction I'd go with a crossover steering and skip the z-bar. I don't like the shackles but if you adjust the angles on the front then it'll be good. Keep the front steering angles stock.

Despite the 1.6 is a noticeable power&torque upgrade I would rather think about header and exhaust build up. Also I dream about those tires but in 31x7.6-15 size.
