Standard Wiper to Pulse wiper conversion
« on: July 08, 2011, 05:15:30 AM »
Hello all!
I'm a TracKick newb but have a lot of experience with working on autos in general. I recently picked up a 92 tracker on the cheap with pretty low miles that runs great but has several small issues that I'm fixing one by one. I haven't started an "introduction" thread in the interest of not adding more forum clutter.

I've been poking around in the FSM to troubleshoot my windshield wipers. They only operate in high setting and fail to park. Mist function also works but they do not park when the switch is released. According to the manual the combination switch is a goner and needs to be replaced. Bummer. I have not started poking under the dash with my multimeter yet to confirm a faulty switch but I was looking at the wiring diagrams of both systems and it APPEARS that everything in the circuit between the fuse and wiper and washer motors is the same except for the combination switch. The wire colors, pin numbers and motors are all the same. I am also assuming that the connectors on the main wiring harness are the same to save on cost between the base and LSi Tracker.

So, I guess my question to the community is... Has anybody else successfully swapped over the standard combo switch for the pulse wiper switch successfully? Anybody who is more familiar with the column and electrical systems on gen 1 trackers see any problems with this idea? I figure if I have to replace an expensive and difficult electrical component I might as well gain some functionality so long as I don't have to re-engineer the electrical system.

I'm looking forward to your insights on this "mod" and hopefully if it's a viable swap more base model trackers will get the pulse wipers they deserve.

Peace gents!

I thought the park feature was located in the wiper motor, not the switch,
but the switch might also be defective, check out the motor tho before digging
into the switch, you might find worn out brushes or something

I do believe the park function is part of the wiper motor.  Do they park, but just not in the correct place?  If so, then maybe the previous owner took the motor apart and didn't put it back together correctly....so the park position is now off.
You should be able to swap an intermittent wiper combo switch for a non-intermittent one and have intermittent wipers.

Agreed, the intermittent feature is an electronic breaker in the
power to the wiper motor, works as if you were clicking on and
off the switch yourself

The wipers do not park after I switch from high setting or let go of the mist/wipe switch. The wipers just stop wherever on the windshield.
I took a peek at the motor itself and somebody wrote "7-10m etc" in some white marker. Looks like maybe the previous owner swapped the original out with a junkyard part.
I guess I'll have to bust out the fluke to figure out whats really going on here. Good to know I can buy the int. wiper switch if in fact that is whats at fault though.
I'll keep you guys posted on my findings. It might be a little while as I just removed the bumpers and rocker covers to do some rust proofing and reconstruction.

Thanks a bunch of the replies!

I don't know where the wiper motor is physically on that year, but on my GV it's behind the battery - when I bought the GV, it had the exact same symptoms - high speed only and stopped right where it was when you switched it off - the problem was corrosion in the connector between the motor & the harness - it looked like battery acid had been spilt into it.

The corrosion was so bad that I ended up cutting the connector out and soldering & heatshrinking the wiring together, but it's been troublefree for the last thirty months so I'm happy with it.

Confirmed:
92 tracker originally had OFF-LO-HI multifunction switch. Swapped with OFF-INT-LO-HI MFS and gained pulse wipers. Plug n play.

The reason the wipers were malfunctioning was a bent pin 5 (solid blue wire) on the multifunction switch connector.

Hope this helps somebody!
