new exhaust makes the sami hard to sneak around
« on: April 14, 2012, 05:06:19 PM »
Alright guys I've rebuilt the engine and did some "painting" I'll put a thread up later but I just wanted to hear some opinions on my obnoxious new exhaust I made for my samurai. It's straight piped from the cat back w/ 2" pipe and no muffler. There is one slight "S" in the pipe so technically it's not straight but it keeps it tucked in the general area it was in originally.

Cut it back and weld in a angle to get it away from the fuel tank.

Absolutely obnoxious, put a muffler on it.

It doesn't hang very close to the tank, I didn't have the hangers on it here, it sits a little closer to the wheel and further up. Also in the video it's idling high due to I still haven't gotten all of the vacuum lines sorted and plugged up. I'm thinking about maybe a short muffler and a turndown, only reason I redid the exhaust is because the old stock pipe/muffler was rusted and holy so it made a terrible sound and looked like crap.

I guess it really depends on a persons taste. I took off a flowmaster and put on a stock muffler with a new tailpipe to quite mine down. I wanna just hear the radio of the sound of swampers singing in the air... Just me...  8)

I like the sound, but it's a bit loud.

Put a muffler on it, sounds obnoxious. Running around in a noise maker like that makes us ALL look bad. JMO, but coming from a motorcycle background I can tell you loud obnoxious exhausts only attract the wrong kind of attention.

If one person's loud exhaust makes everyone who drives a particular car look bad then everyone would look bad, I've seen samurais and trackers with loud exhaust and I didn't think to myself, "man people who drive those are all dumb obnoxious people"... another good example is Hondas

Cut it, put a Thrush Welded Muffler in and ran the pipe back put with a turndown at the bumper, same sound, much quieter and cleaner sounding. Didn't do it because I was told, did it because it was a cheap way to keep an actual sound but not wake the entire county... oh and btw it doesn't sound like a fart cannon, I'll put a video up in a bit

Zack, Folks are all a bit different.... thats why our rides don't all look the same. It's all good....

Thanks for posting this and given folks a look / hear of what you had done. I am sure that someone else has been wondering the same thing.

There is a muffler design that sounds no louder than a stockie at low rpm's(idle and low cruise), but when you put the hammer down, it produces very little backpressure and is super deep and throaty. This design is called a dual pass loop muffler. It works by having two perforated tubes within the muffler body, the exhaust flow enters the mufflers first perforated tube and passes thru, as soon as the exhaust flow exits the muffler it follows the loop pipe and re-enters the mufflers second perforated tube goes through the muffler and finally exits and follows the rest of the exhaust. What happens within the muffler at low exhaust flow rates is the exhaust pulses in the different tubes within the muffler cancel each other out(think crossover pipe on a V8), at higher flow rates there is enough  exhaust flow pressure to partially bypass the loop lowering back pressure significantly.

Here is a pic of a larger version I used on my Civic

Really.... I've never seen one of these... Cost? Who makes this rascal? HP gain is? Sorry for all of the questions T-Racer... but you caused it!

Did you like it on yer choke..choke..  ;) Honda?

I like the 4 banger kinda quite but may entertain something like this for some easy breathing if it is at a lower decible.. I'm thinking about sticking on a header. Not for theose BIG HP GAINS... LOL...  But mostly for the under the hood Eye Candy. Something like this might figure in if it is reasonable.

Thanks in advance for the info!!!

See Zack... good stuff from yer post already! Thanks again for posting it!!!

OBX makes a few loops mufflers, the one in the picture is from Hytech exhaust($$$$$$)

I had made one from two resonators, cut the sides facing each other away, weld in some sheet metal and tubing, this will be the route I head down for my Sidekick.

The peak whp on top is on par with a simple resonator, while the bottom end and midrange torque is bumped way up, this gets you to top end quicker.

you may scoff at Honda's, but obviously that was regarding old school Honda's, the new generation Kseries are real animals.  I put down 268whp and 234ft lbs of torque from a K24 frankenstein 4banger, entirely naturally aspirated, while getting 38mpg on the highway running premium, E85 and a new tune got me just under 300whp.

And that engine lasted just over 200K miles in that trim

Look, I wasn't intending to get in your case or demean your work. I apologize if I did.  Noise issues are a pet peeve of mine and have been for a long time. It doesn't take much for more and more restrictive laws to be passed limiting modifications to personal street vehicles, weather it be 4 or 2 wheels. It's just a simple fact noise annoys most people, and if enough of them are pissed, police and government usually act.

The general public isn't savvy enough to tell the difference between makes. If it's loud and whiny it's a ricer, if it's loud and sounds like it's exploding , it's a Harley in there minds. It's not just my opinion either, it's the law everywhere other than a racetrack, and even racetracks holding sanctioned AMA events have a 92db rule. Personally, as a taxpayer, homeowner, and CITIZEN, I don't care what you drive or ride, as long as I don't have to hear it from a half mile away. Noise is pollution, and the majority of people don't like polluters.

I was at the Honda Day Drag Races in Atco NJ this last weekend with a buddy and his crew, he was racing his turbo Honda and running mid 9's. There were hundreds of really cool strip only and street / strip cars running, ALL Honda's, all LOUD.  One of the coolest in my book was a 95 civic, normally aspirated, street driven, running in the mid 11's. When you looked at the back  of the thing, you saw a STOCK exhaust! Little tiny tailpipe couldn't be more than an inch in diameter. What you didn't see was the electrically operated 3" exhaust cutout and sneaky hidden outlet for that. Best of both worlds. I told the driver I thought he had a great sense of humor, then he told me about the cutout, and said " I'd rather not attract unwanted attention  until I NEED to. "
He made a lot of sense to me, Id rather be able to go ANYWHERE I wanted quietly, then nowhere without being worried about being busted for noise or worse. Outside the gates of the strip were at least 20 cops from various departments, for several miles in either direction, stopping and issuing tickets by the pound to anyone with a remotely loud car.  They never looked at me twice, except to smile.
