1.6 swap, install questions
« on: January 30, 2012, 07:22:10 AM »
Hey all, got the 1.6 bolted in using the Dodge 318 motor mounts and everything seems to be sitting just about right but I have a few questions.

1.  The motor seems to be square with the chasis but the shifter is cocked to the left side of the opening in the tunnel by maybe 1/2", should this be centered exactly? I think I can pivot the 318 motor mounts and get a bit of movement to adjust this.

2.  I just happened to notice while bolting on the splash plate for the bell housing that the flywheel is unbelievably close to the back of the oil pan, in fact it might be touching the gasket a bit.  I put the 1.3 flywheel and clutch on the 1.6 motor like everyone said to do but this looks really tight.  the motor still spins so there is no binding at any point.  Is this common?  I checked the back of the oil pan on the 1.3 that the flywheel came off and it looks like the gasket is worn flat there also like the flywheel was in contact.  Does that sound right?

Side note: I found one of the Honda intake plenums and it fits just fine under the closed hood.  Not sure if that is the 318 mounts working or the intake but I have plenty of hood clearance with that combo.  (actually have an extra honda intake available, won two on ebay)

Anyone?

The stock trans mount has a lot of give allowing the tail end to be shifted over.  The TT unbreakable trans mount is on its way to my door step and may not allow the assembly to be cocked to the side this much.

On the flywheel, this is the only thing I could find while searching all over....  http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,116846.0.html
I guess I just want to verify that its a tight fit but thats ok, its just the way it is.  If there is supposed to be like .5" to an inch clearnace then I have a problem.

I didn't have any clearance issues witht he flywheel but it is pretty tight.

I'll second that.

If your positive the flywheel is seated proper, i would guess it to be okay from reading that link.  Dunno if it makes a difference but my 16v was from an auto Tracker and i used the 1.3 fly and 1.6 oil pan with no clearance issues.  well ...other than having to drill out mis aligned bolt holes from the crappy motor mounts I bought from RRO.

On the swap I did the shifter is slightly off center to the left, but not by much.
The combo of motor mounts I used were....
passengers side...trackick block mount, 318 car rubber mount (turned sideways, to compensate for the offset), samurai frame mount.
drivers side...samurai block mount, 318 truck rubber mount, samurai frame mount.

Auto and manual trackicks use the same crankshaft..... so it makes no difference.

Thanks gang.
The flywheel seated perfect and torqued down just fine and the whole assembly still spins free so there is not any binding on the oil pan but the extra pan gasket that sticks out at the rear is just making contact.  Just seemed weird but I guess that is how it fits.  I will take off the dust shield and try to trim the excess gasket with an exacto for piece of mind.

Sky,
I used the same block mounts you did but had the offset TT passenger side chasis mount that worked out great.  Like I said, I think I can pivot the 318 mounts to get the tail of the trans to center up a bit more, might effect hood clearance though.

Appreciate the feedback, at least I don't feel like I'll have to pull the whole thing out again because of a obvious error.

Are you sure that you should have a gasket on the pan? I don't think any G16 motors had a gasket.

Correct.  No samurai 1.3 or trackick 1.6 had a pan gasket from the factory.  They were all sealed with RTV silicone.
I hate oil pan gaskets.  Of the ones I have tried to use, I have never got one to seal correctly.  So since then, I have always just used RTV silicone and never had an issue with oil pan leaks.

To add my 2 cents... my fresh rebuilt 16v leaks at the oil pan gasket.  I have to pull it to weld a oil return for a turbo swap and I plan to make my own gasket also.

Another note, I had to crawl under my rig yesterday anyway so i looked at my flywheel.  Mine is super super close also and have not had any contact issues.

Well poop.  The gasket came in the overhaul kit so I used it without thinking.  I did use gasket RTV sealer on both sides so maybe the combo will be ok?  Now that the motor is mounted I hate to have to pull it off and reseal it, but duely noted, if it does leak I will just go back with RTV only.

Thanks for checking zuk1018, its a level of comfort knowing its supposed to be a tight fit.

Yup, exaclty what I'm seeing with gasket flash touching the flywheel.  I'm a mechanical engineer all day long and the way this oil pan fits looks like an oops on the designers part.  It cleared once assembled so they took the gamble and just decided to let it ride instead of redesigning the assembly.  HA!  Somewhere there is a Japanese engineer that has worried about this for the past 24 years.. LOL!

Thanks again everyone...
