stuck in 3rd?
« on: December 21, 2011, 12:05:28 PM »
So, my ex was trying to take my 1987 Samurai in for its emissions test yesterday and the car apparently broke.  This is what he told me happened:

it seems like it's stuck in third.  when you try to put the stick into any of the gears it goes in, but when you start to engage the clutch it doesn't move and eventually the engine dies if you engage enough.  if you DONT move the stick into any gears and leave it in what appears to be neutral, when you start to engage the clutch the car actually moves but you have to engage it really slowly as if you were trying to start in 3rd gear.  when you get up to speed it's about the running speed of 3rd gear.

I am very new to this, but would like to repair it myself (or with help from friends, if possible).  Is there anything anyone can recommend?  I should also state that my poor baby hasn't been driven regularly in a while, although he has a new battery and, until yesterday, has has no problems the last few times it was driven/started (which was within the last few months).  Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you!
Kyn

The shifter sheet is a rather easy fix, get a ZOR Thong shifter sheet, http://www.zuksoffroad.com/Thong-solid-brass-shifter-sheet_p_76.html
