Fusible link + dead electrical
« on: August 24, 2012, 10:15:11 AM »
I have a 1991 Geo Tracker 4x4

Hey guys - Last night I was replacing the automatic shifter base (plastic piece that shows what gear you are in) and as I lifted up the plastic center console, I noticed that there was an aftermarket cigarette lighter charger thing (possibly used to plug in accessories?) As I went to move it out of the way, it gave me a big spark - I tried to turn on the Tracker but all the electrical is dead. I ended up pulling the after market lighter thing and a red positive wire came out from under the dash and noticed that the neg wire was grounded to the metal retaining part for the plastic center console. Tried looking up in there, and man, I cannot find where there positive came from.

I lifted up the hood an noticed there looked to be a fusible link hooked up to the positive side of the battery (like a samurai). Trackers don't have a fusible link correct? I checked all my fuses - everything ok - checked my battery 12v - Do you think it's this fusible link thing??

HELP!

You should have a secondary fuse block on top of the strut that has a 60 amp main along with a 30 and 40 amp that go to your electrical system.  The 40 amp to your switch and the 30 amp to your fuse block for the 'always on' fuses.  Someone might have put a fuse-able link before there to protect from the starter shorting out.

Check the voltage at the 60 amp fuse and make sure you have 12v before and after then go from there.

If it is the 60 amp fuse be carefully taking it out, some of them have bolts down below the fuse that has to be removed before it will pull out.
