VERY strange spark issue...
« on: July 30, 2012, 08:15:31 PM »
Hi everybody,

Recently bought a '87 sami with a 1.6 8 valve, Fuel Injected.

Long story short - I drove it to my buddies place this past weekend, replaced wires, plugs, and bought an Accel coil for it.

No Start -

Ok I thought, no problem, let me check for spark and fuel - Getting both!

Then when I put the plugs in and crank - The plugs clearly aren't firing. Just raw fuel in the cylinders.

I've ruled out having a bad wire, bad plug, I did't mix up the firing order whatsoever.

Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a ground wire has worked it's way lose on the block somewhere and the plugs aren't grounding when in the block?

I need help! Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Make sure the engine is grounded and you have the correct firing order.

Did you put all the old parts back on, to verify it isn't something with one of the new parts causing a problem (I would swap the old coil back on first).

The plugs get grounded when they are put into the block....so I would rule out a spark plug grounding issue.

Thanks for the advice thus far guys...

I did try putting the OE coil back on, and same issue. Here's what I'm thinking...

When I replaced the wires, I took them all off the cap at once, and when reinstalling the new wires, I matched up to the numbers on the cap..simple

Well, what if the cap was originally installed rotated 180degrees? I mean it seriously feels like the firing order is off when I tried this morning, back firing through the intake!

Your thoughts? I just want to enjoy this rig!

Really appreciate it,

I am pretty sure it is not possible to install the cap 180* off.  Try it and see, but I am pretty sure it is not possible.

I'd say you have the spark plug wires on in the wrong order.  The order is 1, 3, 4, 2 going clockwise around the cap.  The #1 cylinder is the one nearest the radiator....#4 is the one nearest the firewall.

Wow! Thank you, that's the information I was trying to confirm...I haven't tried to rotate the cap, but I remember # 1 being closest to the firewall...the complete opposite of how you said it should be...

Much appreciated everybody, firing order was off, but the cap was put on wrong which was awesome when I just matched the cap to the plugs...Needless to say, fixing this fixed the crazy timing/misfire issue while attempting to start...

Still no start though...Looks like a pretty weak spark when I checked again...Does the brown wire go to the negative post on the coil?

What do you mean the cap was put on wrong?  If it is the type of cap that is held on with clips on each side, the cap is keyed and it will not fit down on the distributor housing properly (just went and checked, to make sure I wasn't crazy), if it is 180 off.....so it should have been pretty obvious it was on wrong.  If it is the type that is held on with screws, I am pretty sure the ears are not exactly 180* from each other, so if the cap was put on wrong, then one ear would not line up with the mounting ear on the distributor housing....again, should have been quite obvious it was on wrong.
The two coil wires are brown and black, right?  If so, then the black goes to the "+" and the brown goes to the "-".
