95 sidekick check engine light off and on
« on: October 29, 2009, 06:21:03 PM »
This is really weird but my check engine light will come on for about a day then turn off. some times longer than others but it turns on when I'm cruising at about 45 to 50 MPH and i have noticed that to get it to turn off a can just take the freeway and drive 60 to 65 MPH for awhile until it turns off. Anything would help. I'm dying to figure out what this is. Thanks

It's most likely the EGR but you should just stop by a Kragen auto parts store (other parts store may do the same thing) & have them pull the code. No charge, they hope you will buy the required part there. All we can do is speculate. ???

this worked like a charm.the code came up as my EGR so i took it off and sure enough is was stuck half way open. i cleaned is and bolted it back on and my CEL went off after about 2 minutes of idling

cool .
now if it comes back on , and throws an EGR code , you will need to clean all the passages  and look closly at the EGR to make sure its  pressure tight .
the EGR is just a valve  the opens , or depending on the type , closes  under vacume . inside the valve there is a piston that must seat to  seal . if it doesnt  it will let gasses by  before the engine is rady . thus it throws a code .
and EGR code can be a pain to  get rid of .
but if  it comes back on , take the egr off and clean all the lines  and  channels  as best you can . they go through the engine block  and even up into the throttle body on the 16  V
