RE: 92 Tracker ignition switch
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:48:57 PM »
Hi
I have a 92 Tracker 4x4 Softtop. My ignition swtich (where the keys goes in) needs to be replaced. Anyone here have any experience taking one of these out. I would like to do it myself but cant find any info since I dont have a repair manual.
I have a new barrel and a place that can re-key it for me.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I had mine apart long ago, seems to me there was a roll pin
that locked the key cylinder to the steering column assembly.

You have to take the plastics off the steering column and give
it a good looking over, see if I remembered right

There are 2 headless screws, I forget what they're called, on the steering shaft that hold the ignition in place. Take a dremel tool and notch a line in each one and use a screwdriver to get them out. I think Wild is right there is a pin that locks the ignition to the column also.

There are 2 headless screws

It's a tamper-proof or security screw.

They don't start out headless though - they have a hex head and a narrow waisted portion directly below the head - when you install them you tighten until the head shears off at the waisted portion.

The idea is to make it difficult and time consuming to get the steering lock off - so that would be theives don't get in the car, take the lock off and drive away.

You can either notch the head of the bolts, or take a small sharp chisel and tap the edge of the head to loosen them up (that is how I take them out).  To get the key assembly off, you have to take column cover off (there are several recessed screws on the bottom side), the steering wheel off, the multifunction switch assembly off, and the 2 security bolts out.  Then unplug the harness and the key assembly slides off the end of the steering column assembly.  When you go to put the key assembly back in, just find some regular hex headed bolts and use in place of the security bolts.
