Cant get fan belt to stop squealing
« on: August 31, 2010, 08:18:26 AM »
Its driving me crazy.  Put on a new belt, get it snug (not overtight).  Works great for a couple days.  Starts squealing a little, tighten it up just a tad.  Works fine for a couple days, retighten a little.

This goes on and on, until I run out of adjustment on the alt.  Went through two different belts like this, run out of adjustment on both.

Wondering if I am getting the wrong belt, or if something else is wrong.

87 samurai, stock 1.3l.  Can someone tell me the proper fan belt number for this?  Any ideas would be appreciated to help remedy this.

Get the next shorter length, and over tighten it, it's the only way, or
switch over to a new multi groove belt system you know, looks like this

Also you could check to see if either the pully wheel on the alt or crank is cupped,
otherwise any belt you throw on will squeel. You would then need to replace one
or both.

Check the adjuster bracket on the Alt.... I had a crack in mine that was causing this... I found out about the crack (allowing flex in the bracket) when I went to a shorter belt, overtightened it, and a few miles down the road... snap goes the bracket...

Before you put a new belt on, but after you remove the old belt......wipe down all the belt surfaces on the pulleys with brake cleaner (if you have any oil, antifreeze, excess dirt on any pulley, it will cause the new belt to start squealing pretty quick).
If you put a belt on too tight bad things can happen.....wear out the water pump, alternator bearings and/or break brackets (tighteners).

your alternator bearing is prolly shot. ive had a few of them do that. they really get loud when you use multiple accessories at once. spin the alt when your belt is off and make sure its not gritty or dirty feeling. good luck.

Check the two pivot bolts underneath - I lost one and the end result was the alternator was sitting at an angle and I'd keep on tightening & replacing the belt every few weeks.
