Tires vs gearing question
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:44:32 PM »
I have recently purchased a '92 Samurai which has 33" tires, 4.16:1 transfer case reduction, and 5.13:1 gears. It also sports the 8-valve Tracker swap engine. Top speed in this Sammy is 45 to 50 mph. My question is should I go to the 4.62:1 gears? Is anyone running something similar and if yes, what do you recommend? This Sammy will not be rock-crawled or 4-wheeled hard. I will be using it primarily as a daily driver and for hunting so I need the 60 mph.

6:5:1 Transfer case gears... puts you back in the game with 5th gear. I have your same woe and am watching all of the classifieds for them....

Thanks. I should have clarified why I mentioned the 4.62:1 gears. I am running the 5.13:1 Tracker/Sidekick gears and I have another set of 4.62:1 Tracker/Sidekick gears that give me the option I considering. Would the 4.62's help me tremendously with my situation? I am totally unaware of how to calculate that.

plug in your numbers Here

IMO, the 4.62's would be better for you than the too low 5.12's.

WOW!!! This is one awesome spreadsheet.

Std reduction,  4.62 gears, & 33" tires = 69.8 mph at 4K rpm in 5th gear
4.16 reduction, 4.62 gears, & 33" tires = 62.3 mph at 4K rpm in 5th gear
Std reduction,  5.13 gears, & 33" tires = 62.9 mph at 4K rpm in 5th gear
4.16 reduction, 5.13 gears, & 33" tires = 56.1 mph at |removethispart|@ 4K rpm in 5th gear

Original equipment, reduction, tires & gears = 68.9 mph at |removethispart|@ 4K rpm in 5th gear

A very impressive spreadsheet.......................................................
