First samurai and want to make sure I understand gearing
« on: November 06, 2011, 06:18:40 PM »
Hey guys first postsince I purchased an 88 samurai. Ive read through many threads and this site rocks. I know alot about trackers but little about samurai's
It will be completly trail driving. I need to to be geared as low as possible. Biggest tire i plan on running is a 33. I've read different ways of getting it to crawl but really looking for the least expensive route. I plan on putting 5.12s from a tracker in the diffs. As for the transfer case im confused. Alot of ppl go with the 6.5:1 gears but those are kind of expensive. Im leaning towards running dual t cases but not sure which case is the easiest and best to drop in for the ultimate crawl. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for this great site and information

if you think gears are too much? how much do you think duals are?   I would go with one case with 4.89to 1 and call it good. 5.12's kinda low for freeway driving.

I thought there was a cheaper way to run duals I guess. No concern about freeway driving or speed about 10 MPH for that matter. It will be hauled everywhere.

What is beeter for trail riding a gear ratio in the 4's or 5's?  I just started trailering mine as 65 mph was all I could get out of it without pushing it hard, she's a wee bit old.

I would start off with a 4.1 to 1 transfer case gear set and see how you like it before doing to much to it, they are about 400.00 and do not require any grinding and should be great for medium duty wheeling and the freeway, as far as the diff gears go wait and see how you like the transfer case gears because if you go any lower than say a 4.62 with even a 33 inch tire you will be screaming the engine going down the freeway, some people like doing five grand down the road but not me!, and there is allot of Sammie owners that wish they did not make as many mods to their rigs as they did including me,the more weight you add to them the less they will do.

One thing to remember about the Samurai is the lower you go in the t-case the lower your high range is as well.  The reason most people run 6.5, myself included, is it gives you a solid low range gear set and set's your high range up for stock gearing with 33" tires.

I would check out a gearing calculator and put the numbers through.  Do you want to crawl on the trail and be able to drive around at speed, or is 60 fast enough for you.

One item to remember, you only have 65hp.  That's always going to be ab it under powered.  :D
