samurai wont start :(
« on: May 12, 2012, 10:59:40 AM »
well got her on the road finally and she was running great, people were staring left and right. had a few people talk to me while i was sitting at a red light. then i decided to go to the local sand pit and run her around there for awhile. ran well in there. and when i left and was heading home it started to spit and sputter, it wouldnt go over 30mph. when i shut it off the battery was completly dead, then in the dark i could see the ignition coil sparking from one bolt to another by the tower. the plug wires were doing the same thing where they touched the cam cover. what the heck is wrong?! one fellow offroader said it was the ignition coil, and my local samurai guru said it was the fuel filter. so i changed the fuel filter, plug wires and ignition coil. now it wont even start. it'll turn over but it wont start... im lost and have no idea what to do ??? anyone have any ideas?

For the battery being dead, I would have the alternator checked.  Sounds like it isn't recharging the battery.
For the coil and spark plugs wires sparking, I would look at putting new plug wires on it.

Those two things would be a good start, then I'd check to see if it is still having issues.

i went to autozone and they said they couldnt check my alternator bc they didnt have a plug for it. i put a new coil on it, new wires and fuel filter.(fixed a leaking fuel line also)

but i did get it running. after hours of stressing and rushing(it was sunny and in the 70's for the first time in awhile, needless to say i wanted to enjoy driving in the nice weather..) i put a new coil, plug wires and fuel filter in it then i thought to myself, hmmm maybe it could just be a blown fuse not letting the coil start the motor, there was a loose wire under the hood and it actually welded itself to the frame, made me thing of the fuse being a problem. and guess what it was, a freakin blown fuse!!! put a new fuse in and it fired right up. drove it around with no problems, alternator seemed to keep the battery charged bc i ran it for 30 or so miles and it started back up everytime. sat for 12hrs while i was working, started back up first try and ran my lights and turn signals with no problem this morning.

lesson learned!!!! sometimes its just the little things that can mess everything up. took me 3 hours of racking my brain, tearing stuff apart, trying different solutions and failing everytime. but im just happy its running again!

And I'd be willing to bet the offending wire was a ground wire......Boxcar...

no it was hooked to the positive on the coil. but i think when i jump started it it shorted it touched the frame and shorted out.
