stock 87 sammy need major help

I have a 87 samurai that has the stock 1.3 and i want to put a bigger motor and a lift on it. I love my sammy and want to fix it up on a budget while making sure it is in good running shape. I live in texas and cant find a single person to work on my samurai. I want a bigger motor but i am very mechanically slow and dont know how to work on them. Any Ideas??

The standard swap is a 1.6L, fairly easy to do and gives you some extra power.

Another option is to go with a well built 1.3L.  Sammy Pro is a great place to look at replacement engines.

What area do you live in?  Someone in the area might be able to help.  Can you do your own engine swaps where you have the vehicle stored?

no i have no shop or anything i am mechanically challanged and cant do anything with motors. i live north texas around dallas.

If you are "severly challenged" you need to stick with what you got.Because if somone else puts in the "bigger" motor you wont know a thing about it,for repair or whatever.

You might be better off with lower gears to help turn the larger tires.  That way you can just pick up a built transfer case.

I found a man in dallas who said that i need to locate axles from a 79-85 toyota then locate a 4.7:1 transfer case. Then i could haul a lift and big tires while sticking to the original motor that is in the sammy. Those out their who have done this, is this a good deal, will it still haul those bigger tires and keep the power ill need to trail ride and highway ride?

the man i spoke with said that a 4.7:1 transfer case would allow me to run all the way up to a 36 in tire.

That might be pushing it.  My cousin runs a 8:1 t-case with stock gears and 33" Swamper TSL.  He found it a bit underpowered on the highway until he put 5.12 gears in.  Now he has power, but not enough RPM's to go very fast.

The general thought is 6.5:1 gives you 33-35" tires.  The Toyota axles have 4.11 in them normally instead of the 3.89 and might give you an extra inch or so.

I would take a look at a Transmission Calculator and play around with it.  The one at a friends web site has most of the aftermarket t-case setups available.  A Samurai is listed as the SJ-413.

appreciate that it helped.. I contacted a few places on the web about what gears i need but im still not sure exactly what all i need. This makes a lot of since for a person to want to do all of this and know very litle about anything. I want the bigger and badder that i can go so help is always needed. What lifts do they use on samurais most comonly and how big will they go safely?

spring over axle is a common lift, and can net something like 4-5" of lift, depending on how you go.    I think 6" is the limit though on account of driveline angles becoming issues if I understand what I've been reading correctly.

I have a guy who is going to do it for me and he says he has done a lot of them in the past and ive seen pictures of his lifts and it doesnt appear to be a spring over so well see. I wanna run a big tire so i need a big lift and a new transfer case.

I would use the 6.5 to 1 t-case gears with the stock motor spring over and 32's  toy axles maybe over kill for most samurai's
87sami 32" bfg mt 6.5:1 w/reverse S shifter  1.6 16v sold and missed

As u know the stock motor doesnt pack a huge punch, after the tires lift and transfer case will it have some get up and go to handle the trails and highway?
