Simple oil pump question 2.0 DOHC
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:07:58 AM »
Hi all. Can someone tell me for sure if there is an O-ring required in between the oil pump and the block or is it machine fit? Please let me know. I removed a mangled one on disassembly, servive manual doesn't show one that I see, and I've broken 2 new oil pumps so far trying to torque down. PLEASE HELP!

Page 6-273, paragraph #1 on Oil Pump Replacement, Installation procedure:

"1. Install oil pump to the lower crankcase.  Secure with 3 bolts.  Tighten bolts to 20 lb ft."

"2. If removed, install the oil pump chain guide (1).  The chain tension will have to be adjusted if the guide is removed or if the chain was replaced. Install the 2 nuts finger tight."

"3. Insert a 0.5mm (0.020 in) feeler gauge (3) between the chain and chain guide."

"4. Adjust the chain tension by holding the chain guide against the chain with a force of 20-30 Newtons (4.4-6.6 lb).

"5. Tighten the nuts while holding the tension."

"6. Install the oil pump drive chain cover (1).  Secure with the 4 bolts.  Tighten the 4 bolts to 11N-m (97 lb in). (about 8 lb ft)

Page 6-274, paragraph #7  of the FSM states:

"7. Install new O-rings and install the oil strainer to the oil pump."

The cartoon pic indicates (to me) that the O rings are for sealing the pick-up tube to the pump.

Neither the service manual or the parts manual show an O-ring between the pump and the block.

Thanks to both of you! Someone's been in there before and there was a mutilated O-ring I removed from in between the block and pump on original disassembly. Didn't seem right. I bet someone threw a pickup tube O-ring at that location by mistake.
