Strange steering pull
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:43:47 PM »
Hey guys I have a strange problem with my tracker that I'd like to get a little bit of insight on.

When driving, usually from a stop and tight turn at an intersection my 92 Tracker will continue to pull to the direction of the turn after I've straightened the wheel. It does this for a little while and then the steering gradually becomes more comfortable and the pull goes away until I have to make another tight turn.
I've just recently replaced the struts, ball joints and bushings in the front end which definitely made the front end handle better and it reduced the pull a considerable amount. The pull is now just slightly annoying rather than a tiring fight to point the truck where I want it to go. It still doesn't seem safe to me regardless. I've pried at the steering linkage and moved the steering lock to lock with the front wheels off the ground and nothing seems to have excessive play, squeaks or binding. The tie rods and other steering bits do look REALLY OLD though. Probably original.
So. What do you guys think? Is there some kinda binding occurring when there's stress on the steering linkages or is it some kind of problem with the power steering? I have not had it realigned since I installed the new front suspension pieces but it was aligned several months ago when I got new tires and this problem has persisted.

Get the alignment done - I'm betting the steering is toe and possibly the camber is out and I want to see if I'm right.

Personally I would recommend an alignment be done after most suspension work - and if you've replaced struts, ball joints & bushings - it's definitely needed.  If it was in alignment with worn ball joints & bushes, and you replaced those parts, you're pretty much guaranteed it's out of alignment now.

In fact I'm curious - if I take a car in for alignment (and I had one done about a week ago) the guys will put it on the machine, lift the weight of the wheels and then grab the wheels and shake - by doing that they can detect play in the linkages -loose or worn  bushes/bearings/balljoints/rod ends and if it's rack & pinion - rackends - will show up like this, and if there is wear to the point that stuff needs replacing they will advise against an alignment until the parts are replaced - they will go ahead & do it if you insist, but, they will advise against it.  Don't they do that where you are?

Well, I'm just here asking this question so I can find out if anybody else has had this problem and fix the truck BEFORE i drop $75 on an alignment just to find out I still have to replace steering components and get ANOTHER alignment.
Everything seems tight with the steering system and it all moves smoothly lock to lock whether the trucks wheels are in the air or on the ground. Engine running or stopped. It's exhibiting the same behavior as it did before I replaced the suspension, it's just not being magnified by the binding, creaky ball joints and silicone soft control arm bushings. I know what a bad alignment feels like. And this is not it.
As to whether the tech checked for worn parts before he did the alignment when I got my tires... I doubt it. Most of the so called mechanics are lazy children just out of community college who could give a damn how many times you have to go back to get a job done correctly. All of the good old mechanics are retiring and the new generation just doesn't have any idea of what's going on.
If it's necessary I'll dismantle or replace the whole steering system to find the cause. It would still be cheaper and less irritating than dealing with these so called professionals.

Could be a wheel bearing or a front locking hub is still on or not turning off (sticking).

When you change any steering component it throws the alignment out of kilter, my bet is excessive toe out.

I had too much toe out when I first set my suspension before getting an alignment, the sidekick wanted to dive into corners, almost felt like a torsen LSD was installed.

Do you have power steering?  If so, it could be the steering binding/not working right.  I had a trackick that would bind up and not want to turn/turn hard sometimes.  I replaced the pump and that took care of the problem.

I looked into the power steering by bleeding the system of air and topping off the fluid. When I put the front end back on the ground and turned the wheel lock to lock it felt like the system ran out of pressure when I began to recenter the wheel. The fluid wasn't dirty but there was evidence of past leakage all around the power steering steering pressure hose. My best guess is the previous owner let the reservoir run dry and it fried the pump. I replaced the pump and hoses and the steering feels good as new. No more wrestling with the wheel for me.
Thanks for the replies everybody. Special thanks to Skyhiranger for a correct diagnosis!

Cool.  Glad you got it fixed.
On my pump that was bad, I don't recall that the steering leaked at all....it would just bind up (or I'd lose power steering).
