Strange starting issue?
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:57:39 PM »
My mother has a 94 tracker we call green bean. Green bean has developed a starting issue since the weather has become cooler in that when you first get in and turn the key without touching the gas it will start right up,but if you don't let it warm up before you take off it will die and will not restart until it sits for a few hours. It is a 8 valve 1.6 with EFI. I want to set the timing but can't remember what to do as far as the timing advance goes as it does not have a vacume hose like my Sami . Any held appreciated.  Thx   c

I would be leaning towards a fuel pump and then fuel filter and then fuel regulator. with out any other info.

What I did forget to mention is that once started and warmed up it runs like a top and restarts fine . This only happens if you put it in gear (automatic) and it dies right after a cold start. It has a new rebuild top to bottom with about 5000 miles on it.

The timing is electronically advanced.  You find the plug with the rubber cap on it, by the battery, and short the appropriate pins together.  There should be a sticker on the underside of the hood, that tells you what pins to short, to disable the timing advance.
The starting issue sounds like it could be fuel related.  After it dies, have you tried turning the key on and off a few times, to let the fuel pump cycle and build pressure?  You could also try spraying carb cleaner/starting fluid into the intake and see if it starts...if it does, then that will tell you it is a fuel related problem.

I did hit it with starting fluid and it did not hit a lick, also checked fire to plugs and it was good.im kinda at a loss but will keep after it  till I win if I live that long.  Thanks for the timing heads up,I had done it before but forgot the procedure due to my old age and incompetence .

Hmm, that is odd.  If you have spark and fuel, it should run, since it just ran.
When you are spraying the starting fluid/carb cleaner, do you have the gas pedal pushed to the floor, so the throttle plate is fully open and the SF/CC can get into the intake?  It also may take 3-5 seconds of continuous spraying, to get enough SF/CC into the engine, so it will hit and run.
Did you check for spark at all the plugs, or just one?

I checked fire to the top of cap. The timing was advanced about 8 degrees to far and I found a bad vacuum hose and it seems to be fixed. I will keep you updated.

There is another topic up above that may help you check some other things:  Yours could most definitely be different since it wont re-start though. That could be a vac line, fuel pump as mentioned or one of several other things.

Also if not already done, try searching this problem in the search box.
