New Carb
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:24:15 PM »
When my 86 Sami wouldn't run very good a couple of weeks ago, I thought it  was a fuel pump. That wasn't it.
Then I thought it was a vaccum leak that I couldn't find. But after checking all the vaccum lines That wasn't it.
Then I thought it was timing or the belt jumped a cog. That wasn't it. So that leaves the carb. That was it!
I looked for a Harley carb and it seemed they went for more money than I wanted to spend. So I got a 1979 Toyota carb. That did the trick. I had to put in a rebuild kit and do alot of cleaning, as it had a lot of varnish in it. The butterflies wouldn't even move until I sprayed a lot of carb cleaner on them.
The only surprise was that when I first started it up the critter wouldn't idle very good. I had to tap on the idle stop solenoid to get it working and that took care of the idle problem.
Just got back from a 50 mile check ride and it works great! I still have to check the plugs but it sure ran great. Thanks to the write up on Ack's website, this was a very easy job.
Now I can try to get rid of a lot of wires. Which leads me to my question. Can I run a keyed 12 volts to the coil, distributor, and the idle stop switch? I think that these are the only things left that run through the computer.
Thanks,
Bob
