OOps, this is the Chevy Tracker version.  If I wanted to try another Distributor,  are they all the same?  should I just buy the inside coil ? and is the inside coil molded into the Dist cap or mounted in the Dist housing?
Thanks again.

The owners manual says its a 1998, the hood decal says its a 1.6 motor, the valve cover says 16 valve. the shifter says L,2,D... no od shown.  Nowhere do I see "sport" mentioned.
Just cranked the motor for at least 30 secs and still no code.
I "think" the ECU is correct for the year, and I know for sure that I'm not going to get any help from the shop I bought it from.

Oh, crap, I had sidekick sport in my head.  I guess in your first post when you made mention of "coil pack" that is what threw me off.....I got coil on plug in my head and just automatically thought sidekick sport.  That means a lot of the stuff I posted will be irrelevant.  Dammit, sorry about that.  I'll go back and edit some of my previous posts.

So what do you have?  A 2 door 98 tracker?  If so, then that makes more sense for some of the stuff that the PO said.

Ok, now that I am on the same page that you are...LOL...you will have to use a distributor from a 96-98 1.6.

I'm headed to the Mint 400 desert race in Las Vegas and will start looking for the Dist when I get home.    About a week.

Thanks

Its RUNNING !!!
When I got home, I found a guy that does 'kicks and has spare parts to swap.  I dropped the car off and the guy had it fixed in 15 min.
My info was obviously wrong.  The Dist was in 180 out and still didn't backfire or give a spark.  he turned it , timed it and gave it back.  All is working well !!

Thanks for all the suggestions,  wish I had started with the basics.

Glad you got it going.
So does it run with both ECMs (the old one and new one)?  If so, then that is good, since both are good, you can sell one, if you want.  No real reason to keep an extra for anything 96 or newer, unless you happened to get the spare for a really cheap price.
