HI everyone i am new to the samuri but i have a 87 that needs a clutch..
Just looking it over and it looks like it would be easyer to pull the engine to change the clutch then it would be to pull the transe..  (an old timer told me they used to change clutches in broncos like that). Has anyone tried this on the zuki?

Clutches are pretty easy on the Sammy as you have a divorced t-case and a really light transmission.  I would just crawl under it, pull the jack shaft going to the t-case and the front drive-line, then unbolt and pull the transmission and slide it back and off.  It shouldn't take long at all.

It is easier to do the clutch replacement by removing the transmission; the hardest thing to remove are the bellhousing bolts and you would need to remove them anyway if you were pulling the engine.  Pulling the engine also requires draining/refilling the radiator, exhaust removal (probability of broken off downpipe bolts), plus removal of fuel and vacuum lines, linkages, etc.  AND, as Drone637 pointed out, the tranny weighs in at about 60 lbs, the engine at a few hundred.

I do have to say for a rusted out body rattlecan paintjob, and slower then shit truck. I love this thing! its friggen awsome!

I've changed a few clutchs over the years and I find that if you cut 1/4 off the rear tranny mount bracket that the tranny will come right out. I've fought with a few until I found this trick and tried it. While you got the tranny off take a look at the fly wheel started drive gear. If it's worn out on one side then now is the time to flip it. you'll need some torchs.
