Smog Tips????? It failed!!!!!!!
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:09:03 AM »
I am taking my 93 tracker in for a smog check. I have picked up some new plugs, wires, cap and roter. I plan on a fresh oil change also. Any thing else you can think of to help me pass. The Kick runs good i just dont want to risk failing and paying all the extra money to get it to pass.

Sounds good, take it in good and hot, like just off the freeway, and
fresh gas from a quality station, like Chevron, the big 3 auto makers
are supposed to use only Chevron gasoline for their emissions testing,
they even have it trucked in from out  of state  because there are no
local chevron stations where they are

the EGR Vac. line was not on when we checked it. I must have knocked it loose when i changed out my plugs, would that give me such high levels?

EGR reduces NOX, by slowing down the rate of the burn in the cylinders.

Cat will not affect NOX by as much, it mostly lowers HC and CO

get a new o2 sensor and clean (carefully) your mass air flow sensor. maybe a new air filter too. :D

Get you a can of G2P.  My sammy went from ridiculously high NoX to almost 0 after using it.

A new O2 and MAF will help HC not NOX, clean and check the EGR,
and make sure the vacuum lines are on correctly, the smog guy should
of done that unless you took it to a Check Only station, they aren't
allowed to make any adjustments, at least here in California.

Just got it to pass, changed out the manifold, was cracked in two places, new O2 senser cleeaned the EGR new gaskets. still failed. Then i took it in and got a new cat and went from 1400 NOX to 1ppm !!!!!!!! looking at the old cat i could see why it was failing, i guess the old owner just drove it with the cracked manifold and running it rich killed the cat.

It's amazing how much of a difference you can get by having a working exhaust system.  :)

SEAFOAM... its in the snake oil isle at every parts house. I've used it, it works. pour 1/3 of the can into the crankcase, 1/3 in the fuel tank, then pull a vacum line leading to the intake, with the motor running suck about 1/2 or 1/3 of what is left in the can, turn off engine, let sit 20 minutes. Go for a drive 15 minute drive. Tehn suck another 1/3 into intake, let sit 20 minutes. another spirited 15 minute drive. Then suck whatever is left into intake, let sit 20 minutes. another spirited drive.  Then an oil change.

I've spread the "spirited drives"  over a day .... drive to work, drive for lunch, drive home, change oil at night.

Most of you with think the whole ttreatment is  nutz, but I have had 3 different vehicles fail emissions and then pass after this treatment.  I've yet to see anything bad happen to the motors after this.  Search You Tube for Seafoam and you will see what it does...
