Sidekick wont idle without stalling
« on: May 15, 2010, 09:33:30 AM »
Hey Zuki experts,

My 1993 16V Sidekick isn't without it's little issues but the latest is a little worrying, it may be a quick fix but I haven't taken it to the mechanics yet in the hope that you guys might be able to offer some advice.

Just got back from a 4x4 trip up the logging roads, those bumps always seem to shake issues loose and lo and behold my Kick now finds itself stalling when I come to a stop instead of idling.  If she has been sat for a while she seems to idle fine on short drives but once she warms up on longer drives, idling seems to be a real issue.  When she does idle correctly she's idling at 600RPM which is the normal idle for this model.  She runs great and I have no issues with that, I just need to be able to pull up at the Stop sign without stalling every time, it's getting to be frustrating...Any tips, advice?

I guess the 2ft jump below didn't help!? lol, but what a lot of fun this Zuki is!

Check all of the vacuum lines and the air intake hose, between the MAF and the
throttle body

800 RPM is actually the "normal" idle speed.
There is a part in the intake area that gets worn with age.  I don't know that it is really replaceable....or at least I have never heard of anyone replacing it.  What you can do to compensate for the low idle is turn up the air/idle adjustment on the intake........it is under a rubber plug that is at the back of the top of the intake.  Turn it maybe a turn or so and it will raise the idle just a little and should keep it from stalling or dropping the idle way down.  What this screw does is adjust the air that goes to the IAC (idle air controller).
Here is a link to a pic of the air adjument screw.

Yes, you are right the Normal idle is 800, not sure where I got 600 from and in fact my Kick has been idling closer to 600 for a while so I went and tinkered with the idle and turned it up closer to 800. I also tightened the gaskets around
the Cone Air intake I fitted a couple of weeks back, a couple were very loose especially that around the cone filter which I suppose may have been another reason for the low idle??

Took it for a test drive last night and it seemed to be idling fine, took it up some steep hills and stepped on the gas, idling no problem. I haven't taken it on a longer highway drive yet, we'll see how she does tomorrow after my drive in to work. If she struggles I will take some advice from another forum and check the EGR.

Cheers!
