Sidekick Sport AC compressor
« on: May 05, 2018, 12:42:14 AM »
Hi, May is the hottest month in this country and during the long hour of engine idle at the stop light due to the traffic jam, the AC compressor makes noise louder and louder. Whenever I can accelerate the engine, the noise goes away. Is it time to replace the AC compressor? Any comments are highly appreciated.

I can confirm that when the AC is off, no noise at all! When the engine idle is in just a short time, no traffic jam, no noise as well. Only when you idle the engine over 20 minutes, the compressor starts making noise!

Somebody answered my question in another forum:

"I would guess that the problem is caused by bearings becoming overheated due to low/zero airflow under the hood in prolonged traffic jams. The bearings may be practically dried out You could try an air duct from the fan onto the front of the compressor, but the damage is probably already done."

The bearings are old, so is the compressor. I tried to replace the clutch bearing on my prevulios rig, but the compressor shaft bearing that was also bad. It was also very difficult to replace. I ordered a new compressor, after I spent a significant amount of time replacing the ac clutch bearing.

I kept the relatively new compressor from the wrecked rig. PM if you want it, cheap.

Thanks for sharing. However, another possibility is the belt slipping when it getting hot. The previous owner had changed the belt, but I don't know whether it was the right size of belt or not. Currently due to the time constrain, when it makes noise i just shut it off and on when it is hot.

Not sure what you mean.... the posting order is newest first vs. oldest on top... Is that what you mean? This is to aid in discussion and keep things moving along.

Yes, it is! I don't know if you find it is easy. But I get confused.

That is a "configurable" option - check your profile - I see newest posts last when I'm signed in, newest posts first when I'm not.
