95 Sidekick,2 wheel drive 16v.

the idle in this makes no sense,it starts and goes to fast idle no problem. Won't drop below 1200 most times,then sometimes it will drop to about 550 stumble and then jump back up. I've set the idle according to shop manual in case I've missed something. Checked the ohm reading on the IAC and it's 12.7, so in spec. Have checked connections for all temp sensors to make sure ecm getting proper signal.Changed out throttle bodys with one I know worked before,no change. I do have a crack in the exhaust manifold(34 tube), other than that I'm flustered. Anyone have any ideas?

my 1998 16v used to do something like this. It ended up being a lose EGR valve.
Tightened the bolts and it was fixed.
While this fix was probably just luck on my part, it might be worth looking at yours.

OK this has happened before with the EGR coming loose,but normally hear the exhaust leak. The bolts on mine keep coming loose and backing out,so I'll check it once it gets light out.

I didn't hear the exhaust leaking on mine.
The top bolt was snug but the bottom bolt was loose.
Tightened them both and have been good since.

Exactly what I found this morning. Idle is perfect now. Now to find the idle "slam" problem. Soon as I back off the skinny pedal, it's like the same feeling you'd get running out of fuel. She lurches real quick, and when you hit the pedal again you have the same lurch except this time you move forward instead of feeling like your going to stop.

If you noticed any change in throttle feedback when pressing pedal- try lubing pedal pivot, any springs or such, and check throttle body for smooth action or any gunk buildup causing issues.

check to see if there are any codes.tps? mass air flow?

I had a similar problem to this when my MAF was dirty.

 No codes at all,throttle moves with no binding or sticking. It actually feels though like throttle is closing way too fast,kinda like winding out a gear then remove your foot the skinny pedal real quick.

Try lubing ends of throttle cable with thin oil where it goes into outer sheath at each end. Maybe cable binds when actuated/released causing spaz? Maybe even disconnect cable on both ends and try to feel for free movement?

Oh, and what about your injectors? all firing strong? maybe one's not solid? Ran any cleaner through your tank? Checked the dist. cap and rotor for build-up? Sorry, just asking cause got same motor and want to file this away for future reference. Was thinking fuel delivery related = injectors?


*I had this issue on my 2tc corolla weber when the throttle spring tension weakened. I added a spring and had to stretch it to get rid of the decceleration(?) slam.

Problem found and fixed. Turned out to be a clogged converter. Cut it out and found all kinds of junk that fell out,looking closer it turned out to be a mess of molten innerds. Ordered and a new one and installed. The difference is like night and day,more power,seems to be getting better fuel mileage,and you can even hear the turbo muffler for the first time. Now to figure out why it's giving me a code 15 for engine coolant.
