HELP!! 1996 Tracker axle leak
« on: January 19, 2011, 01:45:39 PM »
Put  Old Man Emu 2" springs on my sons 1996 Tracker and it looks like the front passenger side axle shaft has pulled loose from the transfer case.  Gear oil leaking everywhere!
Is it still safe to drive in 2wd?  What's the fix?  It's almost like the 2" lift was too much.  I still have the oe size tires on.  Will bigger tires lift the rim enough to push the axle shaft back enough to not blow seal?
I know, a lot of questions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's possible when you installed the coils the axle pulled out far enough then to become unseated from the diff. A two inch coil lift alone shouldn't be enough to pull the axle out. I would take a good look at the assembly process again and re do it, making sure to seat the axle into the diff correctly. There's a retaining clip on the end of the axle that slides into the diff. It's a c clip spring affair. They can become dislodged if hammerred about so I'd also pull the axle completely out of the diff and inspect that too.

I'm betting on this ^^^^

Having done something similar a couple times, I question whether you have 4wd also.  You can get the right side stub shaft sitting on the edge of the differential output, then when pushed up in place it binds and will not go in.
Put up on jack stands.  Then with emergency on, tranny in 1st gear, 4WD Lo try turning right CV joint by hand and shoving it into differential.  If it does not go in when turning CV joint by hand, Then remove left side CV joint from axle, loosen both sides differential mounting bolts, remove the rear mounting bolt (allowing the differential housing to shift a little), and try again to turn and reposition Stub shaft into differential.
Frequently when you have jammed the axle in an offset position you deform the seal and the only solution for that is replacement.  Then you have to remove differential, remove/re[;ace seal and reinstall it (being a little more careful).
And yes even a marine could perform this repair.  They even used to (a long time ago) have a hobby garage at the bases, with tools.  My feeling was Va. never cared much for service personnel (back a long time ago), so I hope you the best of luck.
