Rubbing noise in steering column of 1988 Samurai

Rubbing noise in steering column of 1988 Samurai

I recently purchased a 88' Samurai and have a rubbing noise in the steering column when turning the steering wheel back and forth. Is their any thing that can be done to eliminate the noise?

I kind of know the noise you've got.  if your truck sat for a few years before you got it,  then it may just fade off real soon with use.  mine did make a noise like this when I got it, but when I started running her around town, she quieted right down.  not sure exactly what it was, but it went away.

mine does the same thing as well. has gotten a little quieter driving around but is still annoying lol.

It is probably either the steering wheel rubbing the column cover, or the little horn "arm" rubbing against the steering wheel piece (which it is supposed to do).  You can clean the end of the horn arm and the piece it rubs against, then put a little dab of grease on it to keep it from making noise.

It could also be the steering column bearings...but that isn't as likely as the other two possibilities.

mine sounded like plastic on plastic, so it wouldnt surprise me any.  I probably should clean/grease my horn arm bit soon just for good measure.

If it keeps up put the front axle on jack stands and pull apart the steering column (it is not that many screws) then slowly turn the wheel back and forth and listen closely you should be able to track it down quite easily then go from there to fix it.
