1987 Suzuki Samurai running rich.
« on: October 31, 2009, 04:58:32 PM »
Hey, My name is Kyle I am located in lakeside,ca and I just purchased a 1987 samurai and the motor is running very rich. I am even getting a small amount of fuel out of the exhaust. I have been told the choke is stuck in one position, or my mixture control valve is dead, and another person told me to just rebuild the carb. Has anybody who owns a samurai encountered this problem, if so what was the fix? I am located in lakeside, so if anybody knows a good mechanic that will actually work on these things please let me know I need this fixed asap!

there is a little black box behind the speaker on the passenger side in front. This box controls the fuel mixture and after years it can start to cause a very rich mix. IT might be something else but this has always been the cause for me.

Those electronic carbs were the worst and if you messed with one vacuum or even one leaks then it can also cause some issues.

Step 1. Look at all vacuums, #2 borrow a friends little black box and try that. #3 clean the carb.

If all else fails get a carb from a 85 or swap to comething else....Pony carb, Harley carb.

The 85 has only one wire and it works great...still got tons of vacuum lines but is easier to work on. I cleaned mine and installed a manual choke and it makes it purr....before it never idled and once warmed up it didn't want to start. You had to floor the gas pedal and turn it for about a minute with tons of black smoke coming out. ONce I got it started then it ran decent but nevere like d to idle
