blower motor or dash switch?
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:56:39 AM »
I tried searching, but couldn't find what i was looking for.

My blower motor quit working in my 1995 geo tracker.  It doesn't work in any switch position.  Ive had a few people tell me to check the switch on the dash.  Not sure how to test it, or the motor.  I was hoping if this was a common problem, people have already figured this out.  Any suggestions to start off with would be great.  Thanks!

Quite frankly - it could be either.

Find the blower under the dash, it should have a 2-pin connector, disconnect it and hook it up to 12V bypassing the switch - that will tell you if the blower itself works.

Blower motor works hooked up straight to 12v.   Next question is dashboard removal to get the switch out?  The faceplate around the radio and switches doesnt want to come out....   ???

I believe the cover just pops off with some force, then the actual assembly is bolted in place.

Fuses were the first thing i checked.  Its definetly the switch.  I was able to squeeze my hand in there and if i pushed the connector down in the back it works.  Right now i have it wired down so it stays on.  It will work for now.  I plan on doing a bunch of upgrades next winter, so ill address the issue then or before if it craps out again.

If wiring the switch down fixed the problem, then I wouldn't worry about fixing it.  IIRC, the switch is made as part of the HVAC controls, on the later trackicks, so you have to replace that whole assembly, just to replace the switch....yeah, stupid, I know. ::)
You might be able to take the switch apart, clean the contacts, put some dielectric grease on them, and reassemble and get the switch to work for a long time.  If you do take the switch apart, be careful, there is a tiny ball and spring in there and they will go flying, if you aren't paying attention, when you open up the switch.
