15" vs 16" wheels?
« on: July 03, 2010, 02:55:49 PM »
Hi all,
Just finished installing a coil spacer kit, now its on to larger tires.  I have a '98 Tracker and what are everyones thoughts of staying with the stock 15" wheels vs going to 16"ers.  Is there any advantage (other than saving money by staying with stock) in going to 16" wheels?  I am probably going to go with 30's for tires (maybe 31's) but am curious as to what folks think of wheel size.  Sorry bout my ignorance on these subjects but I am just getting into this little beasts!
Have a great 4th!  ;)

I was thinking about a set of 16" wheels for street use, lots of cheep
used tires that come off of the newer trucks in 16" that you can use
instead of wearing out your off road tires

I'd say there's generally a better selection of off road tires if you stick with the 15"s - might be different where you are.

IF YOU GO WITH 16'S YOU CAN RUN TRACTOR TIRES IN THE WINTER, THERE IS NO STOPPING THEM THEY WILL GO PLACES NO OTHER TIRE WILL GO IF YOUR LOCKED UP!

I have run both 15" and 16". The 16's have a couple of things going for them. On the street the lower sidewall height helps the handling a touch and bigger rubber on 16's looks less obvious than the same diameter on 15's. This is an issue down here with the cops. There is also a bit of an optimal ratio that as the tire size increase past certain points it is worthwhile increasing the rim diameter too. On the down side 16's tend to be more expensive and it can be limiting in tire choice. If you are going for a 30" oor 31" then staying with the 15's will be fine.

Another reason I like my 16's is that I have internal beadlocks for them  8)

The replies are greatly appreciated you guys.  For where I am at right now I think I will stick with the stock 15"ers but keep my eyes open at junk yards or on CL for 16's.
