Radio Face Dust Cover
« on: March 05, 2011, 05:31:43 PM »
Awhile back, OK,, a very long while back I remember seeing a add for a clear plastic flip up cover for your AM-FM /CD Player.
Does anyone have a lead on where to get one? Does it really work?

Out here off roading in the "Wilderness" of northern Nevada, I CAN NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE "DUST" you will encounter!! The real bad stuff; the locals call "ALKLIE". It's the color of Bis-Quick and the same consistency, and can be "Bottomless"!! It's like "Moon Dust Quick Sand" and it will swallow your 4x4 before you can even hook your winch to your buddies rigg to get out.

Anyway, the trail dust, it gets into everything and trashed my CD player.

Jluck & Drone637,

Great Idea Source!!  Never would have thought of it myself!

When I get home to Wisconsin I'll check it out. (We have a lot more boat dealers than here in the High Desert!)

Great Idea,
You Never Plan to "Submarine" Your Rig, But S#*% Happens.

Tomorrow is my "In The Big City" day and I was planning on stopping at a few boat dealers about the cover,
I'll check out the prices on a whole unit.

Also I did notice that this unit will have to "Stick Out" a 1/2" or so as the stock 87 Sammy radio "Box"  Face is recessed
to get clearance to open.
 Thanks,

I was thinking about one for mine because if you have your top off and it rains a regular cd player is screwed.

I'm going to do the complete marine system in mine. not that it may ever get that wet from the elements but I would like to hose out the interior on occasion.

I too have had a lot of problems with keeping CD players alive in my adventure rigs. What I've done, and it works great, is switch my thinking and forget about CD's the mechanical parts are always going to fail. I'd suggest getting a deck that has a USB or ipod connection / control... Keep you music on that and you won't have to worry... The Alpine CDE100 is a very entry level deck with a front load USB so you can just plug in a thumb drive and you're good to go for hours and hours... It also has a CD player too that can help you in the process of weening off of the CD. ;) It's less than $100

Here is what I got from the Boat Dealers;

Most Marine Am/FM/CD players are just the same as your car stereo, they only make a
"Water Resistant" type cover, and a seal at the mounting hole to the dash panel.
SO DUST IS STILL GOING TO GET INSIDE!! Unless you seal off the entire compartment where the radio is mounted.
Then you might have a Heat Build-up problem.

They recommended that I buy "Cheap" units and toss'em when they give up the ghost, as you can buy 2-3 for the price of a Sony or Jensen "Marine Radio". Also they recommended the same thing that Eric suggested and get a unit with a ext. port.
The one dealer said he has a ORV Jeep and got tired of having his radio "Jacked", so his radio is installed in the glove box, and mounted a port in his dash. "They won't steal what they can't see"!

Thanks Guys,   I am going to the "Jefferson Swap Meet" in 3 weeks, I'll check out some cheapies there!
