That is an unusual Samurai locking nut setup...  Everyone that I have seen has two large nuts instead of what is shown above.  Odd.

The center bolt hole has always been a mystery to me.  I have never found a reason for it's existance and have never found a bolt installed in a running unit.  My guess is that it's function possibly has something to do maintenence of the birfield axle shaft itself.


Ack, that is not a samurai axle pic.  Notice where the snap ring is on the axleshaft.  All samurai snap rings are on the end of the axleshaft (you have to take the snap ring off to get the hub off).

If you didn't get the hub springs put back right it might be hard to turn,
or if the splines on the inner and outer pieces didn't get put back right,
or too much grease, they only need a thin coating.

Was the hub hard to turn before it got put back on the truck ?

Alright guys I am rebuilding the manual locking Asin Hubs on my 87 Sammy jx.

If that is what the original poster is doing (above text taken from the original post), then why is that obviously a picture of a Trackick hub?

I think the point I am trying to make (in a roundabout way) is that, if you are going to post a helpful picture, please make sure that it applies to the vehicle in question - which is a Samurai in this case.  It cuts down on the confusion.

The only reason I posted that picture was to illustrate that the center axle had threads and no bolt just like mine, at this point I was not referencing the hub just the middle threads, i thought I made that clear when I originally posted that picture. Non the less I got the information that I was looking for. Anyway I took the center "turning" part out from the hub and I actually managed to keep that little ball and spring, it's still really hard to turn with just those pieces ( the center part with the o-ring, the ball and spring, the snap ring, and the outer part.) I think I am going to take it back apart and trying cleaning it better I might even try that break cleaner. Once again thank you

You have to put grease on the 2 mating surfaces of the dial and the hub cover, if you don't, then it will be hard to turn, no matter how clean it is.  Also put grease on the backside of the dial, where the snap ring contacts it.  If you have grease in all those places, then it should turn very easy.
