Pinging/detonation
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:28:03 PM »
Hi guys(and gals).....Im really stumped...just brought my 87 Sami to the shop for a complete  tune up(new pcv O2sensor etc.) and valve adjustment...now the sucker pings really bad(didn't do that before the tune-up)and I should have followed my own advice...if it aint broke...don't fix it...I tried running premium and tried different stations and still a problem...brought it back to the shop and he said checked everything again and he's stumped...he thinks the carb is leaning out or no good or there is carbon build up in the cylinders, but why didn't it do that before all the work? The mechanic also told me he checked with an engine rebuilder to make sure everything he did is with in spec...I'm not very mechanically inclined....I need help/advice and I really love my Sami, but now I'm afraid to drive it...HELP!!!

Check the plugs, make sure he used the right # (heat range) as well
as the right brand NGKs or Denso and then have him set the timing
to 8*-10* BTDC this should solve the ping issue, if not, get back to us here

If you're not going to do it yourself i would definitely get another shops opinion.  I wouldnt trust any shop with my suzuki, but thats just my opinion.  It is possible they didnt adjust the valves correctly, you could be hearing a valve ticking.

If the detonation is bad you should be able to see if manifesting on the plugs...If its minor you should be able to get rid of it by putting high octane gas in.

Hi Guys... thanks for the info ...I had the shop set the timing to 8*(we tried 9)and it got rid of the pinging(also replaced the champion plugs w/NGKs)kinda seems to have lost some power though and it really struggles at highway speeds on hills....I can get out and walk faster...it was'nt this bad before tune-up and valve adj....any thoughts??? ...Thanks,Pap

Well if was running that good, you know what they say, if it ain't broke

What about air filter and fuel filter, mixture of the carb? did he adjust
that too? that might be your trouble, lean and too much advance will
cause the ping too, as well as lower the power, sort of de-tuned if you
want to look at it that way

Yeah I know...I should have left well enough alone....he replaced air filter fuel filter...but he did say he couldn't adjust the carb because it was sealed from the factory.... is there a way to adjust?...it does idle kinda funky...up and down and it did do that before the tune -up...sometimes it would nearly die and then it would go up wildly(sorry no pun intended)I also sprayed carb cleaner and it didn't help ...thanks for sticking with me Wild....Pappy

I wonder if there is some junk that got into the carb, or did the fuel line
collapse come apart inside and is blocking the fuel flow? might look at it
and replace the line if it's old.
