Timing Kit
« on: August 05, 2020, 11:27:19 PM »
I purchased a 2009 XL7 in just about like new condition except, in need of a motor, for $600.  I ordered a 2007 motor with 95k miles on it but since the timing chain was why the motor went out I want to get ahead of the game & install a timing kit while I have the motor out. What & where do I need to order? Also any other good ideas for these vehicles would be appreciated since I am totally new to them

Do I need a kit with new sprockets or are the stock ones good to reuse?

Apparently some of the sprockets are called phaser gears. Do I need to order new ones of those?

Ok update on where I am at getting my zuki on the road finally. The motor I purchased had a bad cam so I replaced the head & cams. When we went to install the timing chain kit it did not fit. The guy doing the actually timing chain install said the 2 chains to the heads take a roller chain & the kit I have was not a roller chain. I ordered what it says for my motor. Does anyone know where the mess up could be?

You may have noticed a distinct lack of responses to your questions - you're actually dealing with a GM product that was rebadged by Suzuki - it was never very popular, although I believe the GM version did OK.  You might get more help in a GM forum, if you can figure out which GM vehicle/engine you're dealing with - I think the engine is known as an N36A.

I notice Wikipedia claims that only 4 2009 XL7s were built - if that is correct, you have a very rare vehicle there ;)

Even though this post went nowhere I thought I would put what happened so if it happens to someone else they don't need go through all the stress fixing it that u did.
In 2007.5-2008.5 in just the XL-7 's (so not the GM versions) they changed the timing chain setup. There is a different version that goes by the block number. When you go to a part store or even the dealership this does not pop up so you have to actually find out which you need to order it
