What are the symptoms of a bad o2 sensor?

usually a check engine light,  the vehicle may run poorly, or get poor fuel economy,   theres a lot of symptoms from what I remember about this.

My 96 got great mileage at around 40 mph, pretty lousy otherwise.  And you could tell it was running rich most of the time, you could smell it in the exhaust.

|removethispart|@ bob, my cluster is out of service, only thing that works on it is the bliker lights and the battery light which is on when ever power os going to it

|removethispart|@Drone, it seems like its running rich, i moved from ~70ft elevation to 6600.  would the ECM and O2 sensor regulate that normally on a 87?

I just remembered, there is a certain voltage range within which the O2 sensor should be.  I dont know what range it is, but basically its easy to test with a multimeter.

The ECM should adjust but it will take a while.  Do you have an 87 Samurai?  If so that is carburated, not ECM controlled.

haha i keep getting different answers from ppl. yes its a 87 and carb'd.  if i change out the o2 sensor, what else will i need to do?

Carb's don't use an 02 sensor, I thought you were talking about a Sidekick.  You probably just need to tune it for the higher altitude.

If I'm not mistaken the 87 Samurai has a "feedback carburetor" which does use an O2 sensor and a very primitive ECU - since this is not fuel injected, there are no injectors and the ECU pulses a mixture control solenoid valve that adjusts the mixture based on feedback from the O2 sensor - unfortunately I have no idea how altitude affects this setup.

do you know a place that would?  i have been told that a MY-Side setup is the way to go but if i can make it work with what i have id rather save the money

You might be right, looking at the wiring diagram there is a spot for an 02 sensor.  I must have overlooked it when I was checking out the wiring diagram earlier.

-Drone, how do i go about tuning it? and what diagram were you looking at?

-Fordem, how would i check to see if the sensor is bad or if that is my setup?

so... did sommore research and found that carb'd samurais have a High Altitude Controller (HAC) its supposed to be switched one way if you are below 4K feet in elevation and switched the other if you are above.  only problem is the chilton book i have is a POS, go figure and doesnt really do a great job of explaining if its good or bad.  i think this is it tho, correct me if im wrong.

You might try reading up on the Factory Service Manual.  You can find one over at http://www.suzukiinfo.com/

It is from .2 to .8 volts (notice the decimal in front of the numbers).

Umm, all samurais had an O2 sensor.
